Some people need an azz kickin. This guy is one of them

He wants to limit all vehicles to a top speed of 34 MPH to save gas.

Yeah, he's the moron doing 50-55 MPH on a 65 MPH road when everyone is doing 70 MPH+ and almost causing accidents from people having to brake, slow down and go around his dumb azz:

This Blog contains details and arguments for the idea that a physical maximum speed should be imposed on vehicles on the public roads. Why? Energy savings, both in mileage, and in the energy needed to construct the average vehicle. It also makes "mass transit" more favorable as a transportation choice.

That sure would help car sales.

That $50.00 POS would be the first thing ripped out of my new car.
The guy is an extremist tree hugger. Shame on him for calling himself a car guy!

good idea... let's add friction to get better mileage.

that is quite possibly the WORST idea i have ever heard.

I wonder if his engine building hobbies involved sleeving the cylinders to reduce displacement.

"I think that 400 Miles per gallon could be easily attainable" I can assure you, if i drive 55mph I will not see anywhere close to 400 mpg...

cars now days have the trans gearing to get better mileage at 70mph than 55. Back in the day the "Ol double nickle" saved fuel because your final drive out the back of the trans was 1 to 1 = engine makes 1 turn the drive shaft makes 1 turn. Now we have lots of good tech that allows us to over drive by huge margins the 1.62:1 is the largest that comes to my mind at the moment but with some of the new 7 speed autos out that might be on the low side.

Point is going slower dose not mean save fuel, some people are just fucking retarded.

CVT transmissions are internally lossy, and produce drivetrain losses almost as bad as automatic transmissions. The idea is very cool and will lead to better efficiency, but they need to figure out a better way to do CVT - right now the typical system involves a belt and 4 bulky wedge-gears.

This guy's idea is idiotic due to mechanical reasons above all others - the mechanism he proposes doesn't create friction, it creates a mechanical interrupt. It won't limit speed of the axle, it will simply implode whenever the speed rises above its mechanical limit. The ride will also be jerky and cause tons of drivetrain energy loss.

Basically, that guy is a moron. His existence displeases me.

Yeah you are completely right. I commuted 170 miles a day for 6 months before I got my current job.

There was a very noticeable INCREASE in fuel mileage, when going 70 vs 80 and going 60 vs 70. There was even a noticeable increase just slowing down by 5 mph increments.

Um, no. You're missing out on basic fundamentals of aerodynamics and drag.

Just as a test, I took my beast of a '94 GMC Vandura on a trip from Central OH to the NOVA/DC area. 3 ton beast with the aerodynamics of a tall brick, coupled to a Gen I GM 350 Smallblock. Not exactly an ideal setup for fuel economy. On the way down, I averaged about 80-85 mph, got about 440 miles on a ~32 gallon tank. On the way back, I throttled back to around 65-70 mph, and got 510 miles on the tank.

Charlie, I assume 80-85 was the top obtainable speed, correct? :p

Oh wait, that's the top *readable* speed. Gotta love early GM speedo's.

I've found at highway speeds my car starts consuming more gas at 70 than 55. But there's no way in hell I'd go 34mph!
But then again, I draft behind big rigs anyways (at a safe distance).:bow:They may not like it but it's not like they don't already have to go where they're going.
