So I took a bunch of e30 parts to the scrap yard the other day. 2 sets of springs, steering rack, control arms, tie rods, etc.. It ended up being 102lbs of stuff! So I drop it off, get my receipt for the trade in value and it's only $12!!

Did I miss something? I thought metal was expensive! How is it that I only got $0.10/lb when commodity prices are through the roof? I really thought shit was worth more than that.

srsly, at those prices, how are all those meth heads supposed to get their next fix??

yup. steel in one box, alum in another. Granted, the tie rods and CAs still had their bushings in, but I still felt like $0.10/lb was a ripoff, especially considering the springs don't need any kind of disassembly and they made up half the weight.

scrap steel is still worth only pennies per pound. aluminum, copper, platinum, etc are where the money is at.

Because they do not waste their time with the little paying metals and go straight for copper and other precious metals they can get their hands on. But mainly copper is what they go after since it is the easiest to steal in bulk from many various locations. These bastards have been known around here to go under someones house, while the homeowners are at work, and rob every damn piece of copper plumbing pipes out from under it.

We are getting about 15-16 bucks per pound of clean aluminum (no plastic end tanks on a radiator, etc.). We get about 150 bucks per ton of dirty scrap steel (ie, crushed cars).

I used to own a small machine shop/manufacturing company. Just some CNC mills and lathes. 99% of my products were aluminum. I made about $700 per month recycling my chips and turnings, all cash. Steel was worthless, I through the leftovers in my dumpster.

steel is worthless unless in huge quality. ALso, you steel wasn't "clean."

To get a great price on aluminum it also has to be "clean" -- meaning ZERO steel rivits or such.

We got an aluminum boat off of Craig's List a few months back for free. Gutted that sucker down to nothing and hauled to the scrap yard. Got about $200 out of it along with a few other pieces of scrap we had.

I dunno I have half a dozen beat up bottlecaps to get rid of, and because of the alloy the wheels are made of, the local scrap yard told me 69 cents a pound for the aluminum. Much lower than I was hoping for.
