His older stuff is of course arguably better, but he has some great new stuff as well. For the record, most of this new stuff all sounds the same because it is all fitting under his 'Year Zero' scheme. This new album plays into the first one released this year.

He plans to release a total of 5 full albums this month.

What I really love about NIN is how technologically literate he is. We all remember the Radiohead problem last year: a great concept, but you ended up with low-quality MP3s for your trouble. NIN not only gives you the high quality MP3s, but he's technologically literate enough to know how to make a good quality MP3 and will tell you the exact settings he used to make it. And, of course, he also releases FLAC files (which only music nerds usually know about/care about) and now 24/96 WAV files, which is something I've never heard of an artist doing before. As a bonus, he also properly tags all his files (down to including lyrics, bpm and high-res album art in each track) and includes a high-res PDF of all the album art.

And to top it all off, he licenses his album under a Creative Commons non-commercial share-alike license, meaning you can do whatever you want with the songs (including giving them away for free on your own site, using them in your own song, whatever) so long as you you don't make money from it and any works you use it in are also licensed under the same license. Plus, he also releases the mutlti-track version of all his songs (that is, all the parts of the song, like the bass, drums, vocal, etc, broken down into different files, like one would see if you were recording the song yourself) for easier remixing and derivative use.

I'm honestly at a loss at how he could be more open and end-user friendly. Rock on, Trent.

For those curious, 24/96 WAV is basically a .wav file (meaning, uncompressed raw audio). The 24/96 part refers to the fact that it's higher than CD quality, in terms of digital samples per second and how much data each sample records. You can only really benefit from it if you have a sound card which supports 24/96 output (otherwise it'll likely get downsampled to the normal 16/44 sound format, and poorly.)

24/96 is the format you'd use if you were recording or mastering an album professionally.
