Is anyone earning $200k+ really taxed at 40%? Wow, that's a lot. But not as much as Canadians who earn $50K and are taxed close to 50%.

One the initial proposal, I think it is okay to tax a bit more the extra richs, but not to fund a war. I would use the money to help the men and women who have to work two or three jobs to make end meets at $5 an hour...
Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

I really don't understand the higher tax for the rich mentality, the whole idea of using a percent of income taxes the rich more as it is, you don't need to increase the percent too.

the point of charity is giving, not being taken from. you chose where your money goes and the causes you support.

The problem I see with a lot of political discussion is the focus on the individual.

Poverty and socio-economic disparity problems don't arise from the fact that poor people are just lazy and irresponsible. Laziness and irresponsibility are just symptoms of a broader social problems. People are socialized with certain values and given certain resources to utilize. It's possible to estimate a child's success (educational, economic) over the course of their lifetime simply by looking at the their location and their parent's annual income.

Some European nations have almost completely eliminated crime, vastly reduced social disparity and have raised the general social state of the population to levels far higher than what America has achieved. This comes at the cost of much greater taxation and regulation. Most Americans do not want this.

America is a unique country. 250 years ago we went out, claimed the wild west as ours, shook off our tyrannical reigns and proceeded to crawl to the top of the global dogpile. Our highly individualistic culture is the reason for our current domination over the rest of the world and the enormous success of our national economy. Please note that success of the national economy does not always equate to widespread social prosperity, but America does have a fairly high level of relative social posterity compared to other capitalist nations.

In the end, I think the most successful path for America at this point will be a middle ground route between socialism and Fascism. Luckily, we seem to be holding this path fairly well. You guys just keep fighting it out, we need the balance.

This is theft. unequal taxing based on income is pure and unhidden theft.

Foced charity to the government. How about this, I'm gonna come to your house, take half of your money, and give it to the government.

Good point but what nations have little crime? Finland, and such?

It would be nice to have people have good opportunities in life, and not turn to vices... but then again they could stay in school until grade 12 and keep from getting pregnant or doing drugs but not a lot in trouble do. Should we force them to stay in school all the way through?

And forcing equal economic equality takes away from people who have worked hard and earned a better life for their descendants. Why build wealth and provide for your children if they won't benefit anymore than the kid next door whose parents blew the college fund on blow or lottery tickets?

with regard to jordan325ic's post: just because a persons parents dont have money is no excuse for a child not to be able to make money. everyone is afforded the right to an education in this country, and if they put their mind to it and pay attention in class and stop bitching about how hard they have it in life they could actually change their situation. i hate it when people hide behind these excuses then just drop out of highschool and restart the cycle.

taxes should be flat rate and thats final. if youre gonna tax anyone more, the difference in the percentage should go to wherever the taxed wants it to go: ie - rich are taxed 10% more they get to decide where that extra 10% goes.

you mean like a "value added tax" like the UK.

i remember have a discussion with my econ teacher when i was first going to collage. if you purchase, you pay a high tax on everything you buy. in doing this you eliminate income tax loopholes. you also bring the " under the table $" into play. tips (service industry ), drug $$, side work paid in cash, illegal immigrants paid in cash, etc. there is a lot of $$ in those that goes unclaimed (tax wise).

anyone from the UK want to chime in and state what they think about the VAT?
