Springfield, Mass. I live next door and for a small city it's a drug rampant murdering thug town with only one good thing going for it and that's the Mardi Gra strip joint. And that is closing soon due to they won't pay their back taxes.

It's a crap hole, gang violence and corrupt politicians, 3 in the last 2 years have gone to jail the city was in receivership aka they were broke and the state stepped in to run the crap hole.

Never been to detroit and haven't been back in the big easy since mardi gras 2000 (that was a blast!) but Newark NJ takes the cake around here for ghettoness. I think it beats Patterson, NJ although that's a close second.

I have to put Boston, MA at the top my my list of places I hate. I spent a few years there while doing a fellowship at Harvard and research at MIT.

The reason it sucks so bad is because it's the most colorless, monotonous, and flat-out boring place in the world. Yet, the locals think it's super cool. Bugs the shit out of you. Plus, it costs as much as NYC...which makes no sense at all.

Basically, you live in a village but pay Manhattan prices. Plus, you get to freeze your ass off for half the year. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.

have to agree to that, I had few properties in Phila and had to go there at least once a week few years back, damn - downtown is pretty scary and there is poverty everywhere, very gloomy place...

Any over-populated, smog-rich, communist/liberal place is pretty effed up to me.

Fuck all that global warming/tree hugger shit, if you can see the air, it's nature's way of telling you "I'm full up! Time to move somewhere else!"

    To the point:
The whole of Virginia east of 95. (Norfolk, Va Beach (haha), "Hampton", Newport News, Suffolk, Chesapeake, etc) I'm serious, I don't know why so many damn people live there. It's not especially nice weather, you have to fight traffic to go to Va Beach (edit: ANYWHERE) ANYTIME, let alone during the summer when you're infested with tourists...
There is so much damn traffic, and everyone's retarded about it. "Me first, me first!!", Roads suck, ghetto overpriced neighborhoods with the houses too close together.
Don't even get me started on the bridges/tunnels. No effing reason why there should be traffic jams there, they just happen. One person taps their brakes at/in the tunnel, and we have a 6 mile parking lot. WTF?

Oh, VA Staties suck, and you can't have radar detectors. Anything else?

Before even mentioning Detroit, don't forget places like:

    Trenton, NJ
Dayton, OH (and the rest of the state, really)
    Milwaukee, WI
    Gary, IN

US Cities - Detroit for sure. Also Atlanta.

As for small towns, most of them suck in one way or another. Meth addicts, nothing to do at night, inbreeding in the southeast, etc.

Internationally, its harder to say. Here in Thailand there is a lot of poverty everywhere, but it doesn't seem to be isolated in one particular town. There are areas of every town where you see it. All the towns I visited/lived in in Germany were okay from a scenery/infrastructure point of view, but not always the most friendly people.
