    SHIT.

It's really a long story that spans a 27 year career as a mechanic of various sorts, mostly BMW, coping with the politics and economics of business, just plain life in general and bumping into the others in it.

The only people I've never had second thoughts about are my four little kids ( Zoe 10, Evan 8, Molly 2 and Liam 6mos) as for everyone else I trust them about as far as I can throw them....Most of the time.

I just have had some people that I am not directly involved with in any way or even really know darken my outlook on humanity.

I have always had this sense that I didn't belong to this generation (I'm 44) and relate a great deal more to the people of my grandparents generation.

They were trustworthy, they said what they meant, did what they said and they said it out loud to your face. I respect that. People aren't that way any more.

I just have to get used to it.

I'm even farther from that generation you speak of, so it stands out even more when I see people behaving like they should. Like when I go to the midwest to visit my family, I swear the people there are behind the times and they don't realize how people are now.

But I love it there. People don't hesitate for a second to help out a person in need. I don't think it's (generally) that way on the coasts anymore.

^ It isn't, unfortunately. People on the coasts (and much of the world) are getting more and more concerned of the way others perceive their actions. Almost everyone is afraid to speak their mind for fear of getting judged. Of course, judging and being judged is much easier in an anonymous or semi-anonymous setting like .. a forum.

I think that in general, it takes balls to do your own thing and not second-guess yourself. This is true now, and this was true several generations ago. The people we remember from those generations are the ones who had balls and did things their way. Instead of bending themselves to fit in the world, they bent the world and left a mark in it.

          Don't even get me started....
I'm no angel but I don't have many friends and the ones I do have are very close friends.
I've had some situations happen to me that where total fabrications and from adults none the less.
I've also had my dealings in a Religion (I can't talk about the religion...hint, hint...) and found out how fucked up/weak minded humans can really be.

Sorry, there's no getting used to it. It's more dealing with it and continue to trust no one.

You were a "Fightclubologist"? Where you or a family member auditing one another when you learned this? Or maybe one of those X-Files subsects? Can't trust them either.

Sorry, just a play off your statement... No religon offense intended.

Perhaps the midwest thinks people should be more than amoral, empty shells? (Mostly thinking of NY,NJ,and CA) Chicago-land kids are somewhat problematic like coastal kids, and some uppity area private schoolers aren't right (spoiled). But a lot of the great lakes area prides itself generally on values, if you're in the suburbs that is.

Forgive me for not being more clear. My midwest exposure is limited to Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri. I'm not really sure what you're trying to say.

People are so hospitable there that when I went there last summer to ride in a huge bike ride in Iowa, if I were to knock on the front door of a random house to ask if I could use the restroom, they would ask if I wanted to use the shower and then they'd insist that I stay for dinner and a beer. In Seattle if I were to knock on someone's door most of the time the person will either peek out the window and not answer the door or crack it open and tell you that they don't want to buy anything and then slam the door.

I really don't care for the climate or lack of urban life in Iowa, but I sure do enjoy the people there.

ANYWHO... Colegrove are you having a better day?

Yeah, just saying people in the middle usually tend to have been raised to obey their parents, be loyal to people, and to be honest. There sometimes isn't a reason not to trust others in some parts - especially places like Iowa. Maybe not exciting but if exciting means all the problems like meth, gangs, whatever, emo kids crying for attention, there's a medium between Iowa and Cali.
