    Calling all gun collectors.

I just got my C&R License in the mail (and coincidently my new capital one card)... I'm looking to buy a ww2 bolt action rifle. This will be the first gun I have ever owned (My family was anti-gun growing up).

Before you ask, my firearm experience is all recent (beginning last summer), but includes about 100 rounds through a scoped 30.06 and about 200 shells through a 16 gauge semi auto shotgun. But first I was taught the proper guidelines and procedure of being around and handling firearms first, before I was even allowed to hold a gun let alone shoot a round through it.

I'm leaning towards a .303 Enfield, but I would like opnions.

Big question is how much do you want to spend?

One question why jump strait to your C&R? Just never herd of anyone jumping into that if they have very limited gun knowledge.

    Anyway....

On the cheap I would get this M44 Mosin Nagant. Its the gun from Enemy of the Gate and is pretty fun to shoot on the cheap. It kicks harder than that 16 gauge you shot but for the money you cant beat this...

the 2A Enfield is also a fun gun. But 308 ammo is kind of high at the moment.

Or if you have about $500 to $900 you can find you a bad ass M1 Grand.

M1 is out of my price range.

The reason why I am shopping with a C&R instead of going to Walmart or Dicks is because of cost. Surplus rifles are just plain cheap. And cheap to shoot.

Looking to spend under $200 for the rifle.

Thought about the Mosin-Nagant but I have heard that the bolt is very sticky and somewhat unreliable.

You can get a Mosin which shoots badass 7.62x54R rounds (and can be picked up on the cheap) for about 100$

I've got the russian version of it (extended barrel and bayonette for accuracy.. supposed to be a sniper model) and have put about 5000 rounds through it and it has never had a problem.

The guns had to be made so cheaply and in such mass production that they're reliability is a requirement.

As for the bolt on the Nagant its covered in Cosmoline (MS) and a bit of soaking in Kerosene will fix the bolt up nicely. Out of the guns in your price range I would say that the M44 is the winner.

I'd agree with the M44. Reliable, inexpensive weapon and the ammo is cheap. A German Mauser is another good one. It's a little more money, but the ammo is still pretty cheap. Mitchell's Mausers use to have a nice set. Just stay away from the Russian Capture guns unless you know enough about Mausers to pick a good one.

Have you check the CMP Catalog. They have some M1 Garands and M1 Carbines that are reasonably priced.

You might be able to find other Kar98's other than the Mauser for cheaper. I would think a rifle made by other companies such as Brno would be cheaper. My pops has a Brno K98 that is awesome and made a little after the war I believe so it is newer. Less history, same gun, lower price would be my rational. Also an SKS is probably extremely cheap as well.

The Mosin Nagant series is a good choice for a "starter". There are many variations, Country, Factory, Model, Rifle, Carbine, Imperial era, Soviet era. The surplus ammo market for that round is still pretty favorable as well.
Enfields have about as many variations some rarer than others. The .303 ammo market I always thought was odd, as the surplus price seems slightly inflated as opposed to other calibers, until recently.
Too bad you're in New York. It kinda limits the "Fun" you can have.

The guys I shoot with call the M44 and M38 carbines "Russian strobe lights". If you shoot late into the afternoon just before dark you'll see why.

Yeah I have seen videos of M44's shot at dusk, and the muzzle flash is pretty amazing.
