You can definitely say that again. And yes, I was born in 1980 and grew up on the seedy side of Hollywood, the same area that spawned MS X3 and near where Slash from GNR grew up. Fun times, those. Hollywood in the 80's and 90's was NOT the tourist attraction it is today. The Blvd was really dirty and had all sorts of undesirables hocking their wares (flesh, drugs, etc.) Now its really benign. I remember tourists would come to Hollywood and were like "WTF?! THIS is it!?!" Up until the building of the Kodak amphitheatre and the rejuvenation of the Blvd happened a few years ago, it was a dangerous place. All the houses without fail had bars on the windows, etc.
