And for those mentioning Gig Harbor... very nice area but don't forget to mention people have to cross the Narrows Bridge to get to civilization (toll bridge that keeps going up... what's it now $4?)
2.75 with good to go! :-D

Tacoma and the surrounding areas are fine, and cheaper
Speedhop: I would suggest something in the outskirts of Tacoma. Maybe Bonney Lake, Puyallup, Gig Harbor, Auburn, Federal Way etc. There are nice parts in all of those places, and as with most cities, there are rough parts.
You won't regret moving up here. Oh, and as you can tell by all of the replies, don't bother looking on the East side of the mountains. There is nothing there.

Got off off work today in the Highlands and got back to Woodinville in about 20 minutes or maybe less. Came down Lakecity way. If you know alternate routes you can somewhat avoid traffic.

Interesting inquiry.
I almost always encounter the opposite though, PNW's moving South to California. I do however completely sympathize with the intent behind the move, I myself am becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the "cost" of living here. By chance have you considered states other than the ones located up North? Perhaps Nevada (there's a reason why Las Vegas, and to a larger extent, Nevada are consistently on the top of national lists in terms of growth), Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, etc? Maybe even Idaho if you insist on traveling North?

Thanks for all of the replies. They really are helpful.
The idea behind the move would be to get away from the hustle and bustle of this overly expensive life. I pay $2600 a month on a 2b+2b place no more than 1000sqft. I sit in a half hour to an hour of traffic to get 8 miles. By the end of the day...I want to strangle anything or anyone, which is not healthy. And to top it off it's pointless to go to the beach because everyone and the free born relative is there. I live not 3 miles from the beach and I haven't been all summer!! That's frustrating.
The gf and I are both from Northern Cali and I'm originally from the East Coast. She doesn't want to move back east quite yet, but we know that living in CA might not be the best idea for who we are...we're sick of the people, traffic, expenses, etc.
I am trying to educate myself a little more on what North has to offer. We both like the outdoors and would love some property, we like small towns, slower lifestyle (but near enough to a city where you can go in for the night to a game or a play), we like educated people (not a bunch of hillbillies), family oriented (starting a family...maybe, ha) and I don't want to be able to pass butter between my neighbors (I despise tract homes).
The weather honestly makes me a little nervous, because I golf and I'd love to be able to play that for a portion of the year. We don't like hot or cold weather, mild is perfect. This is a big decision as neither of us have family up there and have really never gone with the intent on looking for living situations.
This all might be a lot to ask...but from my limited knowledge it sounds like PNW would be the best bet.
Keep the advice coming!!

the downside is having to commute by ferry, plus vashon is not cheap“There is nothing government can give you that it hasn’t taken from you in the first place”

Honestly I'd check out somewhere the Northshore School District (great public schools), close to downtown Seattle (we have sports teams and the 5th Avenue Theatre for plays), and golf courses. The weather really isn't bad up here. I love it and I golf pretty much year round. I'd recommend moving to Bothell or Millcreek. I feel they both fit you parameters well. My parents are selling a beautiful fully remodeled home in that general area too ;) BUY IT :D

What I would say is that you should just come up and drive around. Are you planning on finding a job first and then moving near it? Or the other way around?
