Yup, possibly a double repost actually. Not that late model airbags would protect the driver much better. I've never been hit by one, but it sounds like us early model/non-airbag guys may have it better.

Yeah racing in general back in the day used to be pretty brutal. There was something about it on Nat Geo a while ago, I think the stats used to be like 1 in 4 racers would die in a crash.
Everything is MUCH better these days. I mean you can still die easy, but its leaps and bounds better than those early videos.
Every day I wake up we drink a lot of coffee and watch the CNN
Every day I wake up to a bowl of clover honey and let the locusts fly in.
Lobsterbacks attack the town again
Wrap all my things in aluminum
Beams of darkness streak across the sky
Pink rays from the ancient satellite
Every time I look out my window same three dogs looking back at me.
Every time I open my windows cranes fly in to terrorize me.
Seeing that makes you really appreciate all the safety improvements that have been made in the last decade alone. F1 is still a very dangerous sport, but I look at the wreck Kubica had in Canada last year and the guy only suffered some bruises and a spranged ankle....and within a month he was back racing.
