I vividly remember answering the door when I was eleven. It was a few days before Christmas and some guy plopped a frozen turkey in my arms and said, "Merry Christmas!" I didn't recognize the man and he did not introduce himself except to give me the turkey and drive off in his truck.

I was a latchkey kid before I knew what the term meant. Mom was a secretary at an office downtown and Dad worked at a Circle K while finishing his degree. We'd landed in Phoenix after twelve years of Air Force life and, though I didn't know it, we were living from one paycheck to the next. When I look back on those days, I genuinely had no idea we were poor.

Years later that realization has had a profound effect on me. Reading TwoJ's experience of trying to help someone else makes me proud to associate with him through r3v and he does set a good example. It is no surprise the lady he tried to help reacted the way she did. Some... Most of us do not know how to accept generosity from others. It is strange but it is very hard to say thank you.

I hold our military in special regard for their volunteer service so that I can enjoy the life I lead. When I'm traveling and I see soldiers at the airports, I don't hesitate to share coffee or a meal with them. Two summers ago I had the time to spare to give up my seat and take a later flight to help get a group of guys on their way home to their families. The best part about that experience was the literal flood of others that jumped to do the same thing. The gate agent explained the need over the PA and a line formed. We were offered free flights, but all of us just took guaranteed seats on later flights instead.

Great story. I try to do the same thing, at least nod and say thanks. Two Js, I think you did the right thing. You may not have expected the result you got, but keep in mind that people are different in public and in front of strangers. Just like people are different online. All except Blunt. he is truly a turd burgler!

Hah, I don't remember posting that. It was my b-day yesterday though, so I have an excuse for being highly intoxicated on a weekday.

It's a miracle that I'm even awake right now.
