id go with the bugeye WRX. Cheap on maintenance if u dont push ridiculous boost without upgrading the right parts. Also in teh 10k ballpark range. 10k gets u a very nice one.
mk4 is heavy but somewhat powerful. FWD is annoying. the VR is basically untunable unless you have big bucks. tail lights and headlights always burn out. radios always die.
6 of my friends have mk4s and i am just going by what they tell me/what i have observed on my own.
I've driven a BUNCH of them and would reccomend the 1.8T if i HAD to get one. plus they're cheaper, so you can sink that extra money right into making it a BAMF

Hopefully, I'll end up with a DD car and a 2006 r6 to ride for fun and on good days. I can handle FWD for a DD.
If the mk4's have light problems it cant be worse than a volvo and their head/tail's issues. I was given tails for my old mans s60 t5 when the guy found out i had been in the store a week earlier.
