While my parents have always been well off, I've held a job since I was 13, umpiring the baseball league I used to play for. Building a good base for learning the worth of a dollar etc.. I firmly believe that the equal sized trophies is definitely retarded: as there are always 5-6 kids per team that barely put in any effort because they have no effort to put in.

I did swim team from ages 5-18, and I can say that is probably one of the most rewarding sports for children(having coached it also). Since it's a mostly independent sport(aside from relays); you only get rewarded if YOU succeed, not your entire team(except for the championship invitational).

I will definitely have my kids in swimming as their main sport, that's for damn sure. And they will be working if they want a vehicle etc.. but I won't mind helping out with getting them into HPDE's early ;)

I did baseball, soccer, track, and swimming: and IMHO Swimming and Track were the most rewarding and character building sports.

Dumb kids are confident and think they're entitled to success.

It's too bad we don't have more smart kids, confidence is a good thing, but you need to know that success is earned.

We'll be total quality managing these included prince and princesses for quite some time. They will eventually grow up though. It just may add 10 or 20 years to their childhood.

I sound cynical but I do have hope for the next generation. This one seems to realize it pushed the pendulum too far over before letting it drop and is noticing the effects of artificially inflating the self-worths of the kids we brought into the world. The question is, as Luke very concisely answered, how do we keep from making that mistake again.

Every kid left with an equal sized trophy. I wouldn't put my kids in a league like that. People don't understand that you have to work hard to win. Also, you sometimes lose. All of these kids are going to feel like they deserve a trophy just for being alive.

Following my nephew from "little league soccer" to t-ball, and then into actually little league, and rocket football, and with a step son that is 6 in wrestling and rocket football next year, I don't see the problem with the above example.
Kids at that age are not there for the competition. The team sports need to be fun, and need to include everyone. And make everyone feel like a valuable part of the team. As this would be the basic first step of team work values (as I see them).

Now, my nephews little league teams, and especially rocket football team (football has been the elite sport I guess you would say in our area) NOW, is no longer like that. They are 8-10 year olds. They are old enough to know that the best kids play the most, at the positions they fit the best. They are there for the competition. And in my mind that means if you lose you don't get a trophy. I think that at this point they are still learning team work values, but the competition aspect is already instilled in them. At this point it's a matter of working on real team work, and personal technique.

They all did get a trophy at the final game of the year. But they were also 10-1, and pounded pretty much everyone.

I can't wait until my step son, and then my son is in rocket football. I'll be coaching my nephew next season and am looking forward to it. They are a great bunch of kids, and have come a long way in just a short time.
The problems with the older group IS just what you have mentioned with the younger kids. They are lazy, and they feel that the participation is enough. And that is a problem with the coaching staff they had. Those kids that are moving on to middle school, and then high school football (or all sports) just got a lesson from the coach that it's OK to give 50%. They had one full contact practice a week, and one light contact a week. The younger group practiced 4 times a week full contact.

Maybe a bit of rambling. Sorry. Excited to have little ones old enough now to get involved.

              Haha.

Unfortunately dumb asses that do beat their kids make it "wrong to spank". That's BS. The lack of spanking IMO has led to 5 year olds that rule households.

My niece can't be taken to a store as my brother/wife, are afraid of the embarrasing random fit she will throw. So one stays home or they get a baby sitter to avoid taking her anywhere.

When all she needs is a good spanking once in awhile.

My son and step son get spanked. Not very often, but they are pretty good boys.

agreed fully on the spanking. served me right. competitive sports served me well also, as well as actually getting left behind one grade cause i was a little shit who wouldn't do any work... got me to get my act together, this "no child left behind" stuff is rediculous, natural selection FTW.

our society in general has gone soft and weak. we are intentionally handicapping the youth of our majority, to give an fair shot for minorities in the future? it's retarded.

shit, this mass stupidity sickens me. i personally will spank my children if they are rebelliously mis-behaving. if someone tries to stop me claiming that i'm beating my kid, i will show them what a real beating is. government and society are intruding into people's business way too much already these days. ...that's why i voted for the Constitutionalist Party and will so every election as long as this waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles "take care of me for myself" shit is still the tune of the american masses.

I think the big issue is NOT about spanking or not, beating or not...but simple communication. No one talks to their children as people...but usually a thing they own.

Too many people are breeding without having any clue about what parenting means. They seem to think they are making a new toy, and when that toy starts crying, misbehaving, whatever, they have no clue about how to deal with it.

Rule #1: No "baby talk" allowed. Googly-goo coochie-coo will not help your child develop in any way. Do NOT allow Auntie to do it, ever.

#2. Don't let your kids piss you off. Seriously, ever. Keep your mind level so you can respond instead of react. Nothing your child is ever gonna do is truly new, so just relax and firmly correct.

#3 Praise often and consistently, but ONLY when the child has actually done something. Praise a 2 year old for wiping their butt is great, toilet training is hard...but would you do the same for an 11 year old? Love and praise are absolutely necessary.

#4 Do not ever threaten. Punish as needed, but never ever threaten, especially if you are angry. This is all part of keeping a level head, BTW.

If you watch parents with out of control children, you will see...a lack of control. Watch closely (Wal Mart anyone?) and you will see the exact same behaviour over and over, with lots of different people. It truly is disgusting, and is what is making the entire world fall apart.

Get your head right before you make babies and your babies will be better people.
