Good grief! My favorite car company doesn't make anything I want to own!

More details:

My first BMW was a 16yo 325 Super Eta. It was ragged when I got it, but the drivetrain was sound. Soooo easy to work on, I restored it to primo condition while using it as a daily driver over a two year period. It never once failed to get me or my family where we needed to go! Loved that car, but the kids outgrew the back seat. I sold it to a friend and bought a 2000 323iT with only 77K. YES, it's a much nicer car if you have to drive 500 miles somewhere and spend the day in than the E30, but it is nowhere near as durable. All the BS plastic cooling system components that fail on a regular basis are making me crazy! The oil separator and it's ancillaries are plastic as well. The interior bits aren't as good as the '80s parts, either!

And now, with the new generation of Bimmers, you can forget about checking your own oil, or even properly draining your diff. NO %@^#& DRAIN PLUG!

So.....the 323 is for sale and I'm going back to the '80s with something like this:




Kids fit fine, and driver will be happy again!

Any pics of your touring I have a 5 speed in mine as well. That Mtech is for sale.

E28 M5's seem to take a bit too much TLC to keep running from what I've seen. The E34's are probably cheaper to run.

That's an Mtech 535is, not an M5! Still has that great M30 motor. As much as I'd like to have the 6 pot brother of my E30 M3's S14 under the hood, the experience an acquiantance of mine in Vegas who owns an E28 M5 made me think twice. He was thinking of having the engine "refreshed", which for him meant complete rebuild, at the 150K mark. Then he found out the parts quote alone was 12-14K! So that car is weekend only now!

And yes, I know it's for sale. I've drooled over that thing for several weeks now...:twisted:

I DD my e24. Comfortable, fast enough to be interesting, and with the LSD it can make it through a bit of snow with no issues. An the M30 has a delightful growl.

The newer cars have MUCH less maintenance, true. They have a LOT more capabilities, and are far safer. They just don't hold up as well.

E36s and E39s are generally in far worse condition than their equal mileaged E30 and E34 counterparts.

I don't think anyone is complaining so much about the complexity, it's the lack of overall quality.

I like having things like OBDII, it makes diagnosing issues easier, I don't like having 14 sensors that can render a car dead in the water when they flake out. I don't like made-in-china quality plastics on key cooling components with a high failure rate. I don't like Catalytic convertors that only last 60k, I don't like interiors in a 40+k car that resemble a '94 cavalier. I don't like subframes that rip out of the body in under 10 years with spirited driving. I don't like window regulators that fail with alarming frequency.

I know lots about the new BMWs, but being forced to fork over $100 should I want to change the way the locks work can only be seen as progress for the dealer! And having to beef up the shock towers just so they don't deform when you stiffen the shocks is ludicrous! And as cheap as memory is these days, why isn't the service manual stored onboard digitally? Nice if the i-Drive could do something useful like actually help you diagnose the problem. It could, but BMW prefers building rolling annuities for the dealer service department!

If computers had gotten steadily less user friendly and more unstable, as well as more costly to upgrade, you'd better believe those of here who possess even a mote of resourcefulness would be doing just that!
