Who collected Baseball cards of the late 80's?

Back in 1989 Fleer printed a Bill Ripken card in which on the bottom of his bat were the words "fuck face". The card was caught early and blacked out for later printing but many made it to the public and was a high priced error card. Speculation was that someone in Fleer must have done this in Post Production. Well Bill Ripken comes clean and said that he in fact wrote the words on the bat. I was big into baseball cards up until the strike that sent almost every card I owned in the gutter. I followed the Becket like some Bible and sold more Ken Griffey JR Upper Deck rookie cards to buy things I wanted when I was older. Always wondered how that one got though... Now the case is solved!

Lol Fuckface Ripken is infamous. Alog with the 1991 (IIRC) Frank Thoms no name on front. This Griffeys only go for like $25 per or so nowadays. Or the sought after 85 Topps USA McGwire or 87 Topps Bonds. The good ole days of baseball cards.... I miss em.

I was more into football cards, personally. I remember catching Playoff in a big fraudulent scam they were pulling. They sent me a Vick Contenders auto RC (worth like $500 back then) and a Ladainian Tomlinson auto RC (worth like $500 then also) to shut me up.

I cashed out my collection right after high school when I got my E30. I cashed out for around $6k. I was pretty stoked. But that was back when a jersey card was 1:288 or 1:2500 packs, not one a pack, and a dime dozen. The glory days are gone, now.

Yeah, I was selling the 89UD Griffey cards for $80 a piece. I really never got into the football cards but I still have a hand full of Shaq rookie cards and the 1986 Jordan Nike card that came with the shoes. I carry around boxes of these every time I move hoping for one day they will return to what they once were. But with Scandal and Steroids of the 80s to 90s I think I am only carrying glass coasters for the coffee table........

Id still like to get some of the more known valuable classics, just to have. LIke the 86-87 Jordan fleer, 96-97 Bryant Topps Chrome, 94-95 KG Finest, then the usual football classics (89 Barry sanders score, mcnabb contenders, favre 91 stadium club).

Were you around when grading like BGS and PSA made it big into the market? Their shadiness killed it all.

But for the money that could be spent on those cards, you could spend it on some real auto'd memorabilia.

Damn, was everyone collecting Griffey's UD rookie card????

I sold mine too, about 8 years ago for $120. I still have the rest of the collection. Over 400 mint Griffey Jr and Sr cards.

          I'll probably pass it down.

Wait the griffey rookie 89 UD cards are only 80 dollars now?? FUCK!! haha. I have a ton of old baseball cards from late 80's early to mis 90's. My brother actually got one of the signed Joe Morgan Johnny Bench art cards from one of the Upper Deck series. He used to have such good luck with that shit. I should look at all of them. I have a few complete Upper Deck series too. I have a bunch of 80's BBall ones too. Man I probably have qute a bit of money in those. God this thread brings back memories.

Yeah, cards have really taken a shit in the last 6-8 years. You can get griffey jr. UD Rcs all day long for $20. MJs are even down to a couple bills.

I bet my cards are totally worthless. I wish I would have put my time and money into molesting girls like blunt because while my cards are worthless; memories are priceless.

Well, posterity, you will never know what it cost us to preserve your freedom. I only hope that you will make a good use of it. If you do not, I shall repent in heaven that I ever took half the pains to preserve it.

I have a ton of 80s and 90s baseball cards stached away at my mom's house in Idaho. I picked up a Beckett a few years ago to see if I was rich yet, lets just say I don't own a helicopter just yet. They are worth NOTHING!

                            Man I collected...

I have some serious heat at home too.
All of the Mark McGuire (sp) rookies, Dan Marino rookie, Steve Young, Troy aikmen, Michael Jordan Fun Pack White Sox debut rookie card, all Shaq's rookies, Ken Griffey rookies etc..
None of it is worth shit anymore... I checked up on it a few years back. Very disappointing..

McGwires weren't SP'd... but those things maxed out around when he broke the HR record. Its really sad times how the market is now. I have some Eagles stashed away that Im going to give my son, to head him down the right path.

Fleer actually went bankrupt, and there were some huge fire sales, flooding the market with shit. There were a lot of corrupt things going on, like Scoreboards fake autographs they used to sell by the cases out of the back of their warehouse. Playoffs lying and cheating of the "buy back autographs", which werent really buy backs. Losers make counterfeit cards, or "shaving" the edges and corners to make a card a BGS 9.5. Kinda sad how money hungry the companies got, and ruined a cool little hobby.
