The movie's article in Wikipedia says a lot about the trouble and redtape that the producers had to go through to get filming priviledges in Germany, and especially permission to display the swaztika for filming. A lot of locals whose front porches and balconies were summon to be used by the film were reported to the authorities for displaying the swastika...so it shows that the germans themselves are still really sensitive about this portion of their past.Leave a comment:

46 attempts to assasinate Hitler... I don't know what they were thinking choosing Tom fkng Cruise for such a role.
The law is Section 86a StGB. The wording can be found at the below...
Downfall was a great movie. Just watched Enemy At the Gates with my pops the other day... What's this Stalingrad you speak of?Last edited by Maluco; 01-03-2009, 09:56 AM.Leave a comment:

I've been waiting to see it, bu it only comes out in select theaters in 2 weeks.sooo pissed of when i found out that tom was gona be the lead actor in this. and yeah he doesnt even use a german accent! daniel craig did in defiance (russian accent though), which i thought was a great movie.
just becasue tom is in this movie, it has put me off BIG TIME!
come to think of it, daniel would of done a better job anyway.

i can't remember the actual German law number ETC (although from collecting i should remember it)
it does allow for the display and use of National Socialist symbols for historical and educational purposes. it does not allow for display for the glorification of National Socialism.
IIRC most of "the downfall" was shot in Poland. at least the outside street scenes. it tells you in the extras/making of part of the DVD
i am going to see if i can came up with the actual number of the lawLeave a comment:

I have "Downfall" which I hear was filmed in Germany, by a German director and filmmaker, and this film is an excellent portrayal of the last days. If this was filmed in Germany, how did they get away with having swastikas in deutschland, which I thought were illegal there?Leave a comment:

Well, its due to the fact that in my experience Tom mostly plays the righteous, all-american, pure, morally superior, white male.
Plus I know the true story in depth and dont want to risk ruining it with Hollywood exagerrations and added drama tweaking. I, too, love WWII stuffs. On top of all this, Ive fallen seriously out of love with the whole movie-going experience in the last 10 years so its rare that I even see a movie in the theatres. Its become a gesture of how much I want to see the movie and/or support the people involved more than going to see a movie. To go through the trouble of going, finding parking, waiting in line, dealing with the idiotic general bad manners of the population at large, and accepting the cock in my ass (food, 2 tickets, parking, assorted added extortions) for a few hours is a significant gesture of showing my appreciation to the movie, or the director, or the actors, or the subject matter, etc.

I thought it was excellent, very well done, it wasnt an action thriller (thank god) it was very serious and it moved along very well right from the opening scene to the end. And for the record, I was excited about this movie til I found out Tom Cruise was in it, but I forgot all my opinions I had about him very early into the movie. So even if you dont like Cruise, be open minded and check it out you wont be disappointed, I'm glad I saw it. I also liked the cars that were in it even though they were all MB.

that's right! i couldn't figure out where i recognized him from.
check out Stalingrad if you get a chance, it is only a 99 cent rental at blockbuster and it is on youtube in parts. it gets a little corny in the end, but isn't a bad movie.Leave a comment:

The guy that plays Phil in Shaun of the Dead (his stepdad) was in it, too. :DLeave a comment:

i was historical, but he wasn't the absolute ring leader that they portrayed him to be.
yes, he was in the DAK and that is where he was injured, losing his hand, eye and 2 fingers. he was an outspoken christian. he came from a privileged background and was well educated. he tended to "speak out of turn" so to speak and that did cause him problems in his career and he was disillusioned by where the Nazi party had taken the country.
i thought it was overly dramatic and slanted towards Tom's lack of acting ability with out much attention paid to the other key players in the attempt.
i did however like the fact that they went more in depth with the story after the explosion. most of the time on the history channel (most people's knowledge of WWII are limited to this) you only hear about the attempt and the explosion. no mention is made of the coup attempt.Leave a comment:
