    Is it Linux time yet?

guys, I have been thinking about switching over to Linux for a long time.

Being a retard has its disadvantages though, and I worry about not being geek enough to handle it.

I have a hauppague TV tuner, the HVR1250, which I think has Linux drivers available, but I also need Windows Media Player, unless something else rips in .WMA as good as the real thing @192Kbps.

So the real goal is to get to where I feel comfy setting up a LinuxMCE install that the wife feels safe in using. We both have Low Profile Dell commercial P4 3.0HT w/2GB DDR2 RAM, SATA HDD, PCIe NVidia 8300 256MB (x16, of course) and onboard sound/GB ethernet/basic video, so I assume we have enough power to do as we please with Linux.

DVD ripping is important, as is CD/DVD burning, plus I want to play Bluray movies, and of course play music/movies.

Does Chrome work on Linux yet?

    Suggestions? Ideas?

    Luke

Chrome doesn't "work" for me very well in XP, unless you like to wait and wait and wait for images to load . . . .

    And the "GoogleUpdate.exe" memory hog . . . .

I've heard nothing but good things about Windows 7 and I'm working on getting the beta pretty soon. I'd just hold out for that.

x2. I hear W7 will make PC users feel like they are all OSX'ed out and such. Personally, I can't wait to get my XP laptop back up and running.

if the vista release is any example. i wouldn't hold my breath :)

Luke, the system you describe has more than enough power to handle linux and with the new distros out there like ubuntu, you don't need to be a geek to use it. heck my wife was quite happy using fedora 3 yrs ago. i haven't kept up with the linux desktop side since switching to mac 3 yrs ago but i can only imagine that its gotten even better in terms of ease of use.

I'm now running Windows Seven in a dual boot and it runs great. It's like XP, but prettier and faster.

Ubuntu is a good version. I used that as my main OS for a while. It has huge support and auto updates.

Despite what people say, I am loving Vista SP1 64-bit. The only thing I don't like is the stupid driver signing bullshit.

Linux FTW. All of your stuff will work in Linux Luke, though I've no idea why you'd want to rip to wma. PM me if you have any questions.
