Fed Emmision Requirements, at least the Cali folks won't have to get ready for the most stringent group of emmissions/air quality legislation you have ever seen.

This is why I will not buy anything newer than a 04. I will not put up with it, Shit I may just drive classics from now on get 25 years and older no worries. Till we are like japan and have to buy a new car every 3 years by federal law. We are in for a rough ride on many fronts this time around

Short gist: "Cash for Clunkers", aka government money to crush & scrap older parts cars. That one was killed off, now they've got a new one, they want to go after running cars as well. Think about how many non-enthusiasts you still see out there with E30s, e28s, not to mention e21s, e12s, 02's, etc. Now realize that they'd like to give them 4k to buy a 2004 or newer car and crush the old car. Think about all the nicely trashed parts cars & replacement shells. Think about the spike in replacement parts costs.

                  Write your congressman kids.

                  -Charlie
Yeah, wait until they make this mandatory, and they will if the Dems get their way.

But hey, 4K of taxpayer money to go towards buying an electric car that costs 30K will boost the economy.

It is just like other "minority" taxes. Most people see this kind of thing and think it is cool because it's "feel good" (as long as you don't think about it much) and a way to get lots of money for "free". Minority taxes are taxes that attack an overall minority of the population, pretty much guaranteeing passages when voted on. Tobacco taxes are an example. Pretty soon, you too will get hit with minority taxes and legislation like this that takes away more and more of your freedom.

If Feinstein and congress really is wasting their time working on crap like this, then I am more appalled then I ever thought I could be with those idiots.

How is this program taking away any of your freedoms? No where does it say that it is mandatory, it is simply offering a choice to people who want to turn in old cars in exchange for money. It sounds to me like it is designed to keep gas guzzlers off the road while also boosting sales of new cars. Sounds like a good idea to me. I don't see any evidence presented on that website on any negative aspects of this plan.

Also, the low price of reimbursement ensures that old cars in good condition won't be getting crushed simply because they are worth more than what the government is willing to pay. Just because a small group of people don't want to see a 25 year old BMW crushed doesn't mean 99% of the population actually gives a shit. Even as an e30 owner I couldn't give a shit.
