This is the kind of half-cooked, moronic crap when you have a super-majority in the legislature and a Governor who considers tick-tack-toe to be a "tricky" game.

I read the actual proposed legislation. It is even worse than just a ban... it is left up to the Oregon EPA to determine if something is allowable or not. If they think that the item will increase the car's output of harmful Global Warming materials, it gets the thumbs down.

It's absolutely amazing and stupid. All you Oregon guys on this forum should contact your legislator and tell them to back the fuck off. They should be aware that most likely, people who ignore their cars and put no mods on them, or ever bother to change the oil or air filter, would cause way more damage than any mods we could put on our cars. Of course that leads to the cash for clunkers type of bill, but the point is still valid. People who mod their cars generally take care of them better and chances are, any mods that we do would lower the emissions and make the car more efficient (well, and up a few HP at the same time :) )

The Governor is a real danger to the stability of Oregon and really should be kicked out of office. That won't happen because the legislator is even more stupid than he is, but it is a nice thought.

Oh, and 90% of the liberal hippies in Oregon live in the People's Republic of Portland and the Eugene Commune. The rest of us are quite normal.

If it wasn't so sad it would be funny. Most of them don't realize that they are a walking contradiction.

It's crazy here now. Like I said, there is a democratic super majority with a democratic governor. That is a bad, bad combination (and not specifically because they are democrats. It's just bad to give that much control to one side of the equation). The checks and balances have been turned off. But, that is what the voters in Oregon wanted... so here we are. What do you think it would cost to ship my E30 to the Cayman islands?

Stick to your own state, you might get some of your facts correct then :)

The 'per mile' tax is meant to replace the gasoline tax. As cars become more and more fuel efficient, people will buy less gas, and the state will not have enough money to pave roads, fix potholes, repair bridges, etc....

By tallying how many miles you drive, the state could then tax you based on that. Insurance premiums would also be tied to it, so that those people who only drive 1000 miles a year can pay less than those who drive 15,000 miles a year.

Makes sense to me. Drive more, pay more. Drive less, pay less.

Do you really want the state having a GPS log of everywhere you go and when how long all that. Sounds kinda like a invasion of privacy to me, and some thing that could be abused very very easily. Sounds very Orwellian and shades of 1984 dose it not.

First of all, the state never "replaces" taxes. It just adds on more taxes. If I had a 100% assurance that the government would actually repeal the income tax in favor of a permanently set sales tax, I would vote for it. But that will never happen. It is the same with this per mile tax.

Secondly, the state has plenty of money to pave roads and fix bridges even if they eliminated the gas tax. They just choose to spend that money in other ways.

Personally, that kind of invasive taxation is the kind of thing that should never, ever happen. It is bad enough already that the government gets to see all my financial information. I don't want them seeing everywhere I go too. And liberals always point the finger at conservatives when it comes to invasion of privacy ranting about the patriot act and such. But seemingly as long as it is tied to a new tax that allows the government to redistribute money to make everything equal, then it is OK to invade your privacy. It only isn't OK if it might catch people who are trying to blow us up. Of course they will be able to also charge you your monthly speeding bill along with the mileage bill since they will have a record of that as well.

Not to mention I have some very easy ways of making a GPS report that you are in a completely different position than you really are. It is a piece of cake to do this, so the whole theory is completely flawed in the first place. I can make the GPS record me going back and forth to work and the store every time I use it even if I have driven to Alaska and back. Which also brings up a good point. What if I am driving in a different state? Can Oregon still tax me for those miles? What if I live in Washington and work in Oregon? Do they still have to pay? What about out of state trucking firms? Do they have to install GPS and pay Oregon for the miles driven? BTW, people already do pay more for driving more with the gas tax that we have in place plus, it also gets revenue from transient vehicles. I am not saying it is a good tax, but at least it isn't as completely bone headed as this mileage tax. Oh, and this new program would take at least 10x more money just to administer it compared to the per gallon tax. Do you want me to go on with reasons why this tax is stupid?

When are people going to wake up and smell the coffee? Taxes like this are completely unnecessary, play on the fear factor that so many people have about different subjects, and only promote bigger and bigger government.

                            Portland is commie central.
                            This bill is absolutely ridiculous.
Imagine the jobs lost to begin with.
Not only do you create a monopoly for the dealerships, there is no one to say a stock part is legal or not. LMFAO!
All in the name of "emissions".
Let's not forget that many aftermarket parts actually improve gas mileage as well.
