the real danger lies in the possibility of the chain breaking when you're going down hill

that is why I wonder what the fuck trouble it is to leave at least one brake on the damn bike, OH NO MY BIKE waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles FRIENDS WILL THINK I'M AN EVEN BIGGER waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles IF I HAVE A BRAKE, PLUS IT'S MORE WEIGHT EVEN THOUGH I ALWAYS HAVE MY MESSENGER BAG FULL OF BULLSHIT ANYWAY

but then again, chain breaks, scratch one dipshit
Not that I care, of course.

No Tom, you cannot coast on a fixed gear. They are direct drive 100% of the time. The rear cog is anchored to the hub with a lock ring. If the wheels are turning, the pedals are moving. Period. No pedalling backwards, no coasting. The truest, most efficient form of cycling.

Although I do understand the "connected to the road" thing, fixed and/or single speed bikes are FAR from the most efficient.

These last few don't show the guns or bikes, but I'll let you guess which is which:

                1.

                2.

                3.

                4.

How is it more efficient than riding a bike that has multiple gears allowing you to get the most out of the bike? How is it more efficient to continuously pedal downhill whilst wasting an astounding amount of energy instead of coasting...

Your logic is skewed. And also, how is it the "Truest" form of biking. From the looks of it, it seems to be another emo fad. I guess anything to be unique is cool. Tight jeans, and capris FTL.

Oh and I'll be waiting for you angry curse filled reply.
The first conventional bicycle was a fixed gear/direct drive. There was no freewheel hub, no coaster brake, no derailleurs.

Fixed gear track bikes have been being raced around the world for decades, well back into the early 1900's, even the late 1800's.

And there is no wasted energy riding a fixed gear bike. All of the effort spent pedaling drives the wheels, increases muscle in the legs, keeps the heart rate up, and builds increased stamina.

I'm not emo, and I don't wear tight jeans or capris, nor am I an elitist. I have one of the cheapest bikes you can get.

And I don't waste angry, curse filled replies on little noobs like you. Go away.

Josh, free wheeling down a hill is "technically" more efficient than pedaling down it, but I know what you're saying... It's the most "pure" form of cycling perhaps.

Yeah, that's true. I don't think I was explaining what I meant right. Damn internet.

Explain to me how on a singlespeed bike you are wasting energy when pedaling, if you do not pedal backwards. Which I guess theoretically wastes energy.

And actually how is even riding a multi gear bike less "efficient" If anything it is more efficient.

When changing to a different gear it'd be just like riding a fxd gear bike with a different ratio.

But the thing with racing and early bikes is true.

Sorry where I'm from we referred to them as "Velos" but that was to differentiate them from "roadies", and the "where" is the 80's. I didn't know they had a following outside a select few. I've been out of the bike scene for a while. I was scratchin my head over the terminology for a week is all.
