    ASUS NetBooks

I am looking at the 100x models with 10" screens and N270 / N280 Atom processors. It appears that they all have LED backlight according to ASUS pdf comparisonlist unlike newegg that lists some as being TFT....

    N280 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834220504

    N270 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834220443

I don't care that it doesn't have a cd/dvd drive, as I can share a drive over 802.11 or mount an iso over usb or RDP into my desktop when needed. What I do care is battery life , light weight and good screen.

    Anybody got one of these?

I bought the original Asus EEE 7" netbook back in december 2007 when they first came out. $400 at the time. I was very pleasantly surprised with the build quality and usability for basic things (web browsing, IM, etc). I bought it to give to a friend who didn't have a computer, and used it for a few weeks before handing it over.

They are very light weight, the battery on this one lasted plenty long (3-4 hours i guess), and the screen, although small, was fine for staring at for a long time browsing the web. I am sure they have improved the screens since then, anyway.

Ya, I'm using the 1000H right now. The thing is awesome for what it was designed for. I will say I don't think I could have it as my only computer, but if you have a desktop or maybe even a bigger laptop, the thing is perfect. My battery lasts just a tad over 5 hours with regular use and my screen can get way brighter than I care to look at.

Let me know if you have any other questions...I'd be happy to answer them.

The Dell Mini spec wise isn't as good as the Asus and is more expensive to boot.

B V - yours has the 6-cell 6600mAh battery correct? Do you know if the batteries among the different versions are interchangable? How quiet is it and how hot does it get?

1000HE uses 6-cell 8700mAh and then there is also a Polymer 5600mAh and the 1002HA must have a thinner battery as the case is thinner and does not have a bulge on the bottom of it with it's 2-cell 4200mAh....

Yeah, mine does have the 6600mAh battery, but I don't know if they are interchangeable across all the models. As far as the noise, it's really quite quiet and I have never even noticed a fan running...some of the usual noises on boot-up, but other than that, it's virtually silent. The laptop itself doesn't get very hot, but the transformer in the adapter can get pretty hot if you're using it while it's plugged in. One of the nice things about the "buldging" battery is that it gets the ass end of the laptop off the table and allows a good channel for air flow. I will say a 8700mAh battery would be amazing.

I'm running Vista Home Premium on an HP Mini 1010nr, I installed a 32GB Runcore SSD and 2GB of Ram (total cost came to about $450). I Love it because I can walk around with it in one hand.

I looked at the Asus One and just didn't like the over all look of quality and the way the KB felt.

EDIT: Oh yes, goes for about 2hrs on a charge while I'm working on it (net publishing goofing off in here etc.)

Liam, which model did you look at specifically from asus? the 1002 is slick with a brushed aluminum case.

I have the 160GB SATA drive and it is actually two 80GB drives I believe. Wait, actually it is an 80GB, a 70GB, and then you get 10GB of online storage. I'm not 100% sure it is standard laptop size as I've never looked inside.

Yeah, from reading it's probably partitioned that way and one physical drive. Got one on the way to see if they are as good as people say they are :)

Yeah, the partition makes more sense than the dumb shit I was saying. Anyway, I'm sure you're gonna like it.
