thank god i read that spike jonze was directing it about a year ago, and have been waiting for a trailer ever since. i work at a kids museum and every once and awhile i sneak off and read it lol. i am soo there for the first showing
Just reading a few things on IMDb, Maurice Sendak actually approached Spike Jonze about directing the film. It had been on the radar since the early 90's, but Sendak didn't think anyone was up to the task of directing it.
True. SJ has been talking about it for some time now. Just like Mark said. Girl and Lakai released that line a while ago and it seems like they are very honored to be a part of the movie/ marketing. I think it fitting for a skateboarder to direct this movie.
I just got back from seeing this. Visually, I was VERY impressed. The angles, the sets, the sweeping shots, it was very well filmed. And there were a lot of times when it was VERY cute, and a lot of pretty funny moments.
But overall, this movie was WAY too heavy, and WAY TOO DEPRESSING. I NEVER got that kind of a vibe from that story, even now being almost 30, and reading it to my daughter. Of course it was sad in the book when Max made all the Wild Things scared of him, and when he left. But not in the way this movie made me feel. The personalities and problems between one another that they gave to the Wild Things was way too adult.
Their relationship problems with each other were seriously overdone and unneeded. The whole sub-plot with K.W. and the 2 owls, Bob and Terry made no sense at all, and was totally unnecessary. It only served to make her character even more depressing, as well as Carol's. And the little ram guy that no one listened to, the one big guy who never spoke, and all the rest of them were nothing more than the personalities of a group of depressing hipster emo kids transformed into big giant creatures.
I liked this movie for it's directing and it's visual style. There's one scene in particular where Carol is showing Max the model he made of his perfect world, with all of the little miniatures of the monsters living together happily, and it's nothing short of breathtaking.
But as far as the story goes, I think Spike Jonze ruined this story by turning it into something way too emotional and adult, something he knew would make a boatload of money with the current hipster/emo scene. It almost seems like he took a story that he knew we all liked as kids, and tried to make it appeal to us again by making it seem like the story grew up with us, and carried all of the same problems and issues we have now as adults. I think it was a good idea in theory, but he should have left it as the innocent story we liked as kids.
Saw it last week. Beautiful movie, but boring it dragged on with stuff that wasn't important and scenes that dragged on trying to make a 5 page book into a full length movie. Awesome visuals though.

Fuck I lol'd. I was hoping this wouldn't be the case but sensed it. I liked it enough as a kid and wasn't as pumped as you and others on the forums were, but I'm glad I held out. Thanks for the honest review.
