^I've started trending toward cocktails lately, as I'm growing a bit bored with beer.
I'll take an Old Fashioned with Knob Creek small batch, please.
Give a Sazerac a try next time you're at a decent bar. Not sure if you've had one, but it's a classic that many claim is America's first cocktail. Sounds like it would be right up your alley :). Rye instead of Bourbon and Peychaud's instead of Angostura.

I could talk about this all day haha.
I have not, I'll give it a try.
I'm not too "cultured" on cocktails yet. There aren't many places around here that make "classic" cocktails. Always some new new concoction for their restaurant.

When mixing up cocktails for myself, I stick to simple mostly because of ingredients I have on hand. Usually something mixed with tonic or diet coke, don't know if that can even be considered a cocktail but there aren't any good drinking bars in my area, just white trash meat markets. The last old fashioned I ordered in the bar near my office tasted like swill.
Old Fashioneds are pretty easy to make at home. There are a lot of good Bourbons in the ~$40 range too. Angostura Bitters are super cheap, and available at any liquor store.
There's a lot of satisfaction that comes from making your own as well.
That Saratoga cocktail sounds good I'll have to try that out.
Does anyone know the proper name for this drink:
2 oz. Vodka
1 oz. Sweet white vermouth (martini bianco)
Served on the rocks, shot of soda if you like. I guess it isn't much of a real cocktail with only 3 ingredients but the vermouth totally kills the taste of alcohol, it's dangerous.

I can't for the life of me find a name for it.
Martini Bianco is a dry vermouth. That's really just a version of a modern vodka martini. You can vary the ratios all you like... just however you like it. I've never heard of putting soda in it. Try squeezing a lemon peel over the top so the oil floats atop the liquid.
The Martinez was the predecessor of what we now call a Martini.
Martinez Cocktail
1 1/2 oz Hayman’s Old Tom Gin - any good gin works
3/4 oz Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth - red
Scant teaspoon Luxardo Maraschino
Dash Angostura Orange Bitters
Dash Angostura Bitters
Whiskey and Scotch fan here....either straight or if I'm feeling it, cut with a little water. My favorite mixed drink is probably the ol' mint julep. Amazing. Also love a rusty nail or manhattan.
