That it does! I might just have to use the callouts from your diagram on my sketches ;)

But seriously work the iron filings idea in, it would be neat to sit on a chair built with magnets and watch the field flex and move under your weight.

I agree, the field idea with the filings would be bad ass. Take some pics so i can show it to my Electromagnetism teacher Haha...

I agree you need to make this thing act in only one axis and its has to be kept at the top via c-clips or bolts or something. You cant let the two magnets get out of parallel. And make the "posts" out of something insulating so they dont interfere with the force the magnets produce.

            Good luck!

I haven't read all of the banter in this thread, but I'm sure someone has mentioned electro magnets. I'm pretty sure they are the most cost effective way to do this, and if you really wanted to get clever you could set up regen so when the fat ass sits on the chair and gets up it recharges the power source (this wouldn't be enough to power it though).

Figured I would update seeing as I am waiting for my fiberglass to dry. I ended up talking with k&j magnets and purchased 6 neodymium magnets that have a pulling power of about 80 lbs. Apparently the push force is 1.5 times the power of the pull force, so 3 sets should do fine holding 200ish lbs. My professor wanted me to scale the project down, because when he said chair he really meant stool.... so now its a little smaller than a 5 gallon bucket... I had a really good carbon fiber hook-up until the kid backed out of his offer, so now I am making the chair/stool out of fiberglass. So far It is a shitfest, and not really laying the way I want it to. With some more longhair fiberglass I think I can save it and cover it with the fiberglass mat, but if anyone knows a good amount about using fiberglass it would be much appreciated. I PM'ed Ary already, but I am still waiting on his response.

-Also all of the magnets i bought are now broken due to letting people in my class play with them... people just don't believe you when you say keep them both clenched in your fist...

First a light now busted magnets. Pics officially requested! Did you manage to work in the iron filings idea? If not I want to use it.

What light are you talking about? And I will start uploading some pictures tonight I think.
I got a little set back, as I seemed to have left what I had done on the train...(the train was leaking water and so i put all my stuff on the rack above me and completely forgot about it), but I think it was for the better because now things are going a lot smoother. Currently the base of it is done being "glassed" and I am waiting for it to cure so that I can sand it, cut it to the final shape, and throw some layers of resin over it to make it all sexy-like. From there hopefully I will have enough supplies to start the seat part tonight (i dont plan on sleeping...). Updates soon, Promise:)

Looks neat, is it going to be set up like a piston?

                          ps: thank you!

Yea pretty much. its gonna have a part in the middle that you sit on. kinda gonna look like a huge pill. i'll upload a picture.

just a quick sketch of what it should look like. scan is kinda crappy...but so is the drawing.

That looks pretty bad ass dude, not at all what I was expecting but very futuristic.

Now figure out how to build one with electro magnets and turn it into a huge solenoid! The things you could smash :)

                                That makes me happy...

Anyway, ran out of resin so unfortunately I am done for the night... Time to work on my presentation for tomorrow haha. Here is one of the last pictures I took.

You have no idea how difficult it was to keep those magnets in place before i got the first layer of glass over them... epoxy and resin barely held them in place, they broke free a few times... that was interesting.
