    As mayor Bloomberg put it, the government is not in the business of restricting or promoting religion.

      Great quote from OP article;

      “Who wants to bet this place becomes a "tourist attraction" for Muslims? This mosque will become one of Islam's holiest shrines as it sits upon the site of their greatest modern military victory,”

      You do know the backstory on Cordoba, right?

      From Wiki, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C%C3%B3rdoba,_Spain

      During this time Cordoba was one of the largest cities in the world whose name continues to represent a symbol of Islamic conquest to many faithful Muslims around the world.
      So, ummm, yeah.

        What if that religion had people strap bombs onto themselves and blew other people apart.

        Now you're going to go into how not all Muslims are terrorists...

            two blocks away is hardly ground zero, especially in such a crowded city it might as well be 2 miles. These asshats make it sound like they are trying to plant a victory flag right in the crater.

              ^ That is approximately 1800 feet, a little over 3/8's of a mile. A Funny Car will traverse that distance in less than four seconds. That is too close for me.

                  I support this not because I actually care, but because it pisses off a lot of really dumb people.

                      If these people really thought their own religion was a religion of peace they would have already started building somewhere else.

                        Not for nothing, but there's already a mosque on warren st. only a few blocks away, and it was there before the attacks. I don't like the idea as much as the next guy but it hardly seems like a 'victory flag' to me.

                        Keep in mind that this is coming from someone who's mom worked there, who spent their childhood in daycare there, who was in the building for the first bombing, and was in the street a block away for the second. FFS I still have the voicemail recording from the 11th where my Dad is calling my grandparents and in the background I'm heard saying "whoever did this, I hope we fuck 'em in thee ass 'til they're dead!"

                        So in a nutshell, it won't be the end of the world if they do build it, but if they were decent people (and as a prejudiced person I don't believe they are) they wouldn't plan a new one in the vicinity. You'd think they would get the hint that they simply aren't welcome there.

                          well then if there is one that is already there that close, WHY THE FUCK DO THEY NEED TO BUILD ANOTHER ONE EVEN CLOSER????????

                            I see no fucking problem with this. I'm really getting sick of the racist attitude towards people of Middle-eastern background and/or the Muslim faith. There are bad people in all religions, and even if they 'claim' or 'attribute' their acts of violence to a certain religion, they are not connected. I'm not glorifying the Islamic Faith, I'm impartial. I have both Baha'i and Islamic roots, and I have heard story of my great uncle being decapitated in front of his wife and children for claiming the Baha'i faith. However, from the way I see it, all religions fail at some point, and when they do, people need to look to god(s), and if that god(s) inspire them to act in violence, then they are not listening to god(s).
