I can't remember the last time I saw a kid chewing on a house.

Making sure contractors aren't using sanders on lead based paint is totally understandable. But yet again the Government goes way over board on another issue.

    Side note:
Cali is trying to basically rid any product not based with water. That's a real job creator there.

I pay the guy what he charges, and he charges fairly. For instance, I had to have the faucets in the bathtub repalced recently. With the tilework, new fixtures etc, he charged me like $100.

All the plumbers I called wanted $100 JUST TO COME LOOK AT THE BATHROOM?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

It is AMAZING to me the assumptions you will make to try to make a point.

I say, "What do you want to do X?" he responds with "This much" and I pay him. How that is somehow dirty/underhanded is beyond me.

I don't do things that I don't have the skills to do. It's worth it to pay someone to do it who knows what he is doing, and can fix the problem quickly then to potentially fuck something up, cause more downtime and still have to pay someone to come fix it.

And he does do great work at a fair price, which is why he does a lot of business.

All the contractors around here still think it's 2005 and we are in a housing/renovation boom. Plumbers/carpenters/handymen, are not worth $125+ per hour around here they try to charge.

I want to pull my hair out reading things like this. This is the problem with people. They sit behind a desk and have no clue about the comitment, and cost to run a legitamite business. Youre more concerned with holding on to every last penny, than contributing to your community.

Im not ranting just because Im a licensed contractor, and theres more assholes un-licensed, than licensed.. Its more to do with how properly conservative you try to sound and then you talk crazy like this. I can also promise you this bum you hire cant compete with the standard of work that the average licensed guy does.

I do know what it costs to run a business.

You can swear up and down, and KNOW that he doesn't do great work etc. But you'd be wrong. If he did shit work, I wouldn't use him. Period. We are talking about my house, not some $500 junk car.

He does great work, SHOWS UP ON TIME (something I've found seems to be VERY difficult for "PROFESSIONAL" contractors) and charges a fair price.

Not conservative? This goes back to my point about how the gov't getting involved (most of the time) simply hamstrings and causes the prices of goods/services to rise.

I think I'm gonna have to side with z31 here.

If the red tape haunted house maze of doom didn't exist, contractors would be able to charge a fair rate to do their work, their costs do not go up on skill, but more on how many flaming hoops they have to jump through to work in one or two communities. I know what I'm talking about, I owned a handyman business with three other employees, and it was a ration of shit to work in three cities in one county.

I sold my business to one of my employees and went back to the auto field because I couldn't accept how much bullshit I really went through to change out faucets and light bulbs, patch drywall, and operate a paint roller. I'm sorry but to have to charge the going rate of $80/hr. to change light bulbs just to break even was ridiculous.

AND, to make Johnny Cash happy, I do ALL my own work.

The law is the law. You hire a contractor that is not bonded and insured not only can you be fined but if that guy destroys your home, you're fucked.

Well lucky you! Have you ever asked him why he's illegitamate? He doesent want to pay taxes, thats great, and you condone that? I mean how much effort can it possibly take in OK to get compentency, a 500k insurance poilcy, and one trip to city hall? Theres something wrong there. What if he fucks your shit up, is his good word going to fix it?

Honestly dont want to talk about politics and whys this and whys that. I just figure if we play by the rules it minimizes all the douchbag crooks everyone tries to avoid. The reasons these rules are there to begin with. If noone hires them, they search for a new scam, then we can make new rules for that, or even better send them the fuck back to honduras.

No, not really, I came from a construction based family, very apt at it. Just as talented as a talented guy, but decided to go into the auto field because I didn't want to follow someone elses footsteps, but go my own way. Came back to the industry and chose something that was highly marketable in the area I was in, could have started anything really.

It's called marketing to your customer base.
