You, young man, you should study sales.

Get the books, learn the lingo...if you sell, and do it well, you will have to pay your dues, but you will always have a job available.

                Sales, as in the profession.

Knowing properly how to assist people in buying things. Knowing your product and your presentation well enough to help people make an informed decision.

Having the tenacity and determination to find and assist those customers, then developing a relationship with them so they will be able to use your services in the future.

Having the ability, time and patience to continue to answer the same questions over and over, the consistency to always return a communication promptly and accurately...the whole "professional" thing, y'know?

What you sell is really of no significance. When you are a true saleman, you are selling yourself, but all of the qualities I have listed are what people need, whether it is a one-on-one deal or an entire corporation buying from you.

The top 10% of all income the world over is made by salesmen. Think of this: every deal somewhere has a salesperson involved. Sales really do make the world go 'round.

Find a book called "The Greatest Salesman of all Time" or something like that. Read it, and then lets talk.

i would add one more quality all the top salesmen have in common.
truly caring and having empathy for you customer/clients, and going beyond their expectations in delivering solutions to their concerns.

                  think about car salesmen
the best guy we ever dealt with never tried to sell us the car, listened to what we wanted and got it as promised.
it was a 1980 diesel rabbit ordered new with the color combo we wanted. this was during the oil shock of the late 70's and diesel rabbits were flying off the lots, some car dealers charging big premiums.
we talked to maybe 4 salesmen and all except this one guy said it was impossible to special order one, which wasn't true. it was just that you could sell these cars all day long as they came in, so to special order one meant more work and less profit, but this one guy was willing to go the extra mile.
we referred 3 other friends to him that bought cars.

That actually would be a great job for me. I'm very smart, and enjoy talking to people. I wouldn't mind having a sales job at say BestBuy (although I hate that store) when the time comes. Of course I still want to go to college though and get a degree... because I really want to be an engineer... just not sure what kind. Im thinking electrical, audio, or mechanical.

Talking to stangers aka potential buyers is a very usefull tool. Not everyone can do it (right), some people are just shy or have problems with it, but when you master it, I guarantee you can sell toothpicks at 5$ a piece.

A few tips I've learned over the years:
1] always talk so as to show you are dedicated to the product and that you would personally buy it. Phrases like "I have three myself", "I've been using it for a year myself" etc. (doesn't have to be true)
                      2) never say "I don't know" or "I'm not sure". Watch and learn the way politicians talk. They never say that they don't know something, because there's many ways to get around any question. Even in this case an insignificant lie can be attached. Hesitate too much and you lose the sale.
3] do not get too friendly. No pep talk, no pats on the back, no sexist phrases etc. You're not going out for a beer, this is business talk even if it is a toothpick. This is very unconfortable for many customers. On the other hand, show you're interested in helping.
4] Talk to all customers the same way. All prejudice has to go aside. Terrible clothing, handicapped, stuttering, huge boobs, etc. If a customer senses you aren't taking him/her seriously or you smile a tiny bit, you've lost the sale.
5] probably most important - study the product. It will be hard if its a store with lots of things, but if you can logically explain why the more expensive Samsung is better than the LG, big plus. Get ready for people that are from the field, there can be people that know more about the product than you and if that happens, keep your cool and work with the imformation he/she is telling you.
6] I wrote you can lie, but not the stupid way-off type of lie. Try to say it in a way that can be demented in the future if needed. Use only in critical situations.
7] If you screw anything up, apologize right away. When people see that you've acknowledged your fault and apologized, they'll back down. If you don't, the customer may try to ruin your life.

Dementia (taken from Latin, originally meaning "madness", from de- "without" + ment, the root of mens "mind") is a serious loss of cognitive ability in a previously unimpaired person, beyond what might be expected from normal aging. It may be static, the result of a unique global brain injury, or progressive, resulting in long-term decline due to damage or disease in the body. Although dementia is far more common in the geriatric population, it may occur in any stage of adulthood.
