They were hiking in Iraq, and either strayed over an unmarked border in to Iran or, as some witnesses claim, were taken by Iranian soldiers who actually crossed in to Iraq to make the arrest:
"However, two Iraqis who witnessed the events, recently told the US magazine, The Nation, that uniformed Iranian border guards had crossed into Iraqi territory and detained them."
Profiles of the three American hikers who have been released from prison in Iran on bail after being convicted of spying.
The fact that Iran has yet to formally charge them with anything or allow any kind of trial or legal proceedings to begin leads me to believe that they have no actual evidence of spying or espionage, and that they are being detained to be used as leverage in the future against US actions.
However I'm no expert. That's just my thoughts on things.
Im gonna go hiking in Iraq near the border of Iran? Fuck that shit let them rot.

I wasn't aware that hiking was a crime punishable by years in a foreign prison.
I guess the whole Iran Hostage Crisis was cool by you guys too. Work in dangerous countries, get what you deserve, right? How would you guys feel if it was a relative of yours over there in jail? Your parents, siblings, etc? Would you still say "Let them rot?"

While it wasn't illegal do you think it would have been smart to hike near the Cambodian border during Vietnam?
Or hike near Bosnia around say 1990?
