I'm OK with a word processor that highlights misspelled words in order to draw the child's attention to the error, but I don't think they should be able to right-click and instantly have the computer correct it for them.

That way you cover both typing errors and spelling errors but still require the student to fix the error themselves and learn the correct spelling.

In theory I agree with you on that. But as shitty speller my self, Its something I am just not good at and have never been even with tons of practice and reading it really does not seem to get better no matter how hard I try. I can understand both sides of this argument from personal experience, Dyslexia kicks my ass even to this day on some things

e30e, I would argue that once you have a solid grasp of the English language, spelling comes quite easily. I don't remember misspelled words being an issue in high school.

I just don't understand the drive to make school easier, while we are simultaneously being surpassed in math and sciene by the rest of the world.

Proper spelling is a sign of a well structured thought. If somebody can't even put a few letters together, it gets worst when it comes to put ideas in place.

The learning process for spelling is technically a different learning portion of the brain, spelling is character recongnization; while puncation and grammar rule based aka logic base.

Science and math is lacking in understanding due to standards not requiring application of the learning process.

As for the instant gratification that children have, this has greatly affected education because a childs brain learning process has basically been re-wired to reject traditional learning and education. This is not education's fault, but society and parenting's fault.

I guess my biggest gripe with people who don't understand how hard being a teacher really is. Its not a cake job that people make it out to be, while I can't change people's opinion. I gave up the opportunity to be a welding and agriculture teacher to be a ditch digger because.....Ditch digging is actually easier and has more opportunity.

I literally have spent thousands of hours just to PREPARE to teach a single day; now I wake up put gloves on and dig and make MORE money.

Not to cheapen this statement but in all fairness you did get one with a REALLY GOOD OUTFIT to DIG DITCHES FOR. Oh and I have made a fairly good living at digging ditches for the better part of 15 years you would be amazed at the money there is in ditches ;)

Didn't need to spend 6 years going to school to dig, but I would go back to college in an instant if given the opportunity.......plus I look really cute in a tie lulz.....Safety hat ruins my near perfect receding hair line.

yup I do, she puts in nearly as many 12-14 hour days and 7 day weeks as I do in a year ( at least I get ot for it, I made more in the last month than my mom makes in 6) . This time of year shes got 4-6 hours of grading and paper work every night for something like 250 little shits. You really have to LOVE teaching to do it.

UP's PPE is orange hard hat, orange vest, safety glasses, ear plugs, steel toe's.....My zone is az, nm, and Cali; I'm guaranteed to be in Casa Grande, working towards Tucson till atleast May.....foggy safety glasses really doesn't exist. The only thing worth a shit to me is the plugs and boots, trains are fucking loud and I want my toes. Helmet can't protect a train from killing me.
