Well, let's see.....there have been 3,540,735 recipients from 1995 to 2009. When the wealthiest 10 corporations get 72% of the money, I would hope you can see how far farm subsidies have come from the quaint idea of helping support embattled family farms. Quarter of a trillion dollars spent.....

we have a family farm that gets subsidies for corn. I can tell you that the money we get does not even come close to covering anything when you have a bad crop. This year we have been farming feed corn and soy beans. We had more rain than normal in the months of October and November when we were to pull the crops. We could not even get the equipment into the field for over a month. We took a huge loss because of mother nature.

If you had any idea what it costs to farm, much less pay the taxes on the land, you might think twice. Sure some farms can get what seems like a lot of money from Subsidies but in the grand scene of things, its pennies to what it actually cost to farm.

You feel you want to learn how to farm, feel free to come on out. I can even get you a free airline ticket from Anchorage AK.

That goes for anyone that has never farmed that would like to see what real work is! Except the free ticket, brother works for Alaskan Air in Anchorage.

Had I not moved to Idaho potato country, I might have taken you up on that offer, I gotta say, the last 20 months have opened my mind, my eyes, and changed opinions I had, formed ones on subjects I never thought I'd have one on, and reaffirmed exactly why I did what I did.

we are 1500 acres of land, in which 1000 of that is farm land. To get the subsidies you speak of we can not gross more than $500k a year.

I understand a thing or two about farming and subsidies.

Then you understand the risks that farmers take to keep America fed.

                          OFF topic

I can't wait till corn will be produced more for ethanol.
Fuck the oil companies, until then, we are suckin their dicks.

that's why my 02's runnin off the corn juice :D

                          another question..

how often do advancements happen in corn gene changes as far as genetically modified corn for more yield?

Of all the Gov't expenditures, subsidies for domestic food production should be one of the last standing, IMO.

First, we only do feed corn. This corn if picked right off the stock at a certain time is eatable but not like the corn in the stores. This is meant to be harvested and stored in a silo for feed.

Ethanol is a fleecing of America.
                              http://www.businessweek.com/lifestyl...514_058678.htm

                              to answer your 2nd question.

You can buy genetically altered seed (at a much higher cost) (and limited to who you are able to sell to) to help with disease and insect control. But preparing the land and getting the right amount of light and water is key.

We have to rotate the crops every so often so it does not strip the soil of its minerals. Sometimes we turn over a crop just to boost those minerals. But its really a guessing game because you cant control Mother Nature. That is what the subsidies are meant for, to offset the cost of farming. It is truly hard work and a high risk job, when you own the farm.
