2nd in ACT scores, yet 2/3rds of 8th graders can't read proficiently.

Why do I think using this one piece of info to make that large of a claim is a bit exaggerated?

Perhaps the original article is exaggerated a bit? CNS used to be called the "Conservative News Service." I have to think that they have some sort of agenda with a name like that... just as sites like "Common Dreams" obviously have a liberal agenda.

I'm assuming that states with stronger unions probably have higher wages and better benefits thus attracting better teachers, which in turn produces higher test scores. Just a guess though.

        Original article:

Nationwide, only 30 percent of public school eighth graders earned a rating of “proficient” or better in reading, and the average reading score on the NAEP test was 262 out of 500.
In the National Assessment of Educational Progress tests administered by the U.S. Department of Education in 2009—the latest year available—only 32 percent of Wisconsin public-school eighth graders earned a “proficient” rating while another 2 percent earned an “advanced” rating.
        Hurr durr.

Then I will make the correlation, that all those states have unions and the children still can't read.

So we should abolish all unions.

False correlation is a great thing!

ACtually I brought that up on GRM when I posted it there, but forgot to here. IMHO it indicates that the unions aren't working.

I like how you say that the statistics shouldn't be used to establish causation, then contradict yourself almost immediately.

In partial response, what do you think the purpose of a union is? If it is "make teachers teach better (or attract better teachers)", then the ACT results speak for that. The lack of statistical difference in the 8th grade results probably speaks to a general limit to the rate at which children can learn at that age.

Interesting considering you posted something completely false.

Yep I was wrong about WI. But still shows your nonsense link wrong, and that was the point.

No worries, I think both our posts are a bit presumptive because we are using one small piece of info to try and make a much larger point.
