If you've got better data from "the REAL world" this is where you put up or shut up.

Well it sounds like GM is taking this battery thing very seriously, and they should. I guess this is just one of the kinks they will have to work out, especially ramping that pack up to full-blown electric only range.

I've seen on several electric car conversion sites people will put straps around the large lithium batteries because the plastic case has a tendancy to swell, and letting it go unchecked can cause physical failure. That's pretty fucking lame, why can't we get some american made shit that just works.

Not sure if this has been posted before but here it is anyways.

Basically running gas and diesal together, I don't know about these claims but if it dose then this is something we should be looking into.

            Land Rover Defender 300Tdi

            1998 Land Rover Defender
            Station Wagon

            300Tdi – 2.5l Intercooled turbo diesel
            5 Speed Manual
            119,000km when fitted
Average fuel consumption 10.7 l/100km Standard Power: (red line)
            66hp @ 3350rpm
            620lbft @ 2300rpm

            DieselGas Power: (green line)
            88.9hp @ 3600rpm (+34%)
            930lbft @ 2450rpm (+50%)

Range has increased from 700km to over 1000km at these settings. Also note how the power is increased over the whole rev range.

This is the vehicle used in the economy example.

This example shows typical results for a small capacity, higher-revving intercooled turbo diesel.

Sorry not good enough. It's only good enough for Americans if it's run on flatulence and Greenies egos.

And I'm really starting to like diesels.

Must say thought the jump from 620-930lbft is very impressive.

66hp and 620 lb ft? Does not compute.

Also an additional LPG system will add a ton of weight, those tanks have to be incredibly sturdy to handle the compression that LPG needs. Interesting figures though.

No it won't. A 13gal tank only weighs like 55lbs.

I've looked into this, but the cost vs. economy isn't interesting. Only about 10% fuel savings.
On the other hand LPG coversions on petrol cars allow you to save 50%. And it's been like that for years.

The larger and more powerful the diesel engine, the better economy you can get with this conversion.
In other words, diesel/lpg isn't very suitable for small person carriers.

Also, if you want to look into this, don't read what the resellers/installation companies say on their webz. Look for real world applications.

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- General Motors Co. may redesign the battery for its Chevrolet Volt to address issues raised after federal officials opened a safety probe into the plug-in electric car, CEO Dan Akerson said today.

"We want to assure the safety of our customers, of our buyers, and so we're just going to take a time out, if you will, in terms of redesigning the battery possibly," Akerson told Reuters in an interview.

GM said on Monday it would offer loaner vehicles to about 5,500 Volt owners as it works with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on ways to reduce the risk of battery fires breaking out days after crashes involving the car.

Good job GM. They ruined diesels for most Americans in the 80s with their shitty build quality now they're doing the same for EVs.

Heard about that yesterday as well. I knew there were going to be cuts somewhere and it wasn't going to be pensions or benefits of the Union employees that's for sure. Just in the safety of the battery is all.

APNewsBreak: GM willing to buy back Volts

NEW YORK (AP) -- General Motors will buy Chevrolet Volts back from any owner who is afraid the electric cars will catch fire, the company's CEO said Thursday.
In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, CEO Dan Akerson insisted that the cars are safe, but said the company will purchase the Volts because it wants to keep customers happy. Three fires have broken out in Volts after side-impact crash tests done by the federal government.
Akerson said that if necessary, GM will recall the more than 6,000 Volts now on the road in the U.S. and repair them once the company and federal safety regulators figure out what caused the fires.

Thank god the sales have sucked yet this far. Not many to loan out. Don't fret, we'll just give them more money if they need it.
