Washington (CNN) -- Labor organizer Cesar Chavez was always ready for a confrontation. And now the founder of the United Farm Workers, dead since 1993, is in the middle of a ruckus over the U.S. Navy's plans to name a new ship in his honor.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus will be in San Diego on Wednesday at the General Dynamics Nassco shipyards and is expected, according to the shipbuilding company, to formally announce that the latest Lewis and Clark-class Navy cargo ship will carry the Chavez name.

The final decision on a ship's name is up to the Navy secretary. He considers recommendations from the Naval History and Heritage command and suggestions from service members, veterans and the public, according to the Navy.

Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-California, objects to naming a ship for Chavez. In a statement released by his office, he suggested the Navy is paying too much attention to politics and not enough to tradition.

Agreed. They recently renamed 39th street here 'cesar chavez blvd'. It's between 38th and 40th street. The signs all say it's the 3900 block. All the streets running N/S hare numbered, the E/W streets named. Some person with a hard-on for chavez lobbied the city council and now it's called cesar chavez blvd. Fuck that, it was 39th street from the day I was born and will always be to me.

Becasue those ships go all over the world and are a representation of the USA. The name on the fucking side of the boat is one of the biggest impressions and the 1st impression of not only the ship, but its crew, and the nation as a whole.

Cesar Chavez IS NOT SOME ONE YOU WANT to be representative of the USA abroad as its counter to nearly everything we stand for

I agree on the first part, but again I think you might be mixing up Chavez'sss'ss on the second. Hugo Chavez, the president of Venezuela, represents counter-positions on nearly everything the US does. Cesar Chavez organized destitute and often abused farmworkers in CA and other states to pushed for decent working conditions, wages, etc. I'm sure he did his fair share of controversial things (as does any public figure) but fighting for a decent living is hardly counter to what the US stands for.

They changed 39th Street from 39th to Cesar Chavez because IIRC they were going to change Martin Luther King Blvd to Cesar Chavez Blvd. To many people got upset over the proposed change, so they chose a different street.

erm..... actually it's 18.3%. A minority of whom work on farms. An overwhelming majority of those who do don't belong to any kind of union. In 1985 the membership in the UFW, the largest farm workers union and the one Chavez started, was at 15,000, down from a high of 50,000 ten years before. I couldn't find any data on current membership but it's safe to say hispanic-american involvement in unions represents <0.1% of the population, probably closer to 0.01%. Not "almost a majority", by any stretch of the imagination.

I was wrong, but I'll tell you, I did live my whole life where the Latino population was the majority. I guess I'm more biased from experience.

The Hispanic population now represents the largest ethnic group (40.57%) followed by White (38.85%), Asian (10.19%) and African American (7.30%). The white population represents the largest ethnic group in Orange County (51.26%), Riverside County (51.04%), and Ventura County (56.75%). The Hispanic population is the largest ethnic group in Imperial County at 72.22%. Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties have no majority ethnic group.

Oh, and the fact I experienced the UFW events firsthand. I'm not a big fan of any race trying to imply their elite status over any other.

Agreed, though I don't think Chavez or the UFW ever implied an 'elite status over any other'. Fighting for decent working conditions, decent pay, water/shade out in the fields so as not to die of heatstroke, etc. bears no resemblance to to such a thing. Unless he proclaimed Hispanics to be the new 'master race' and superior to all others, I don't see where you were going with that.
