The small percentage that you speak of is the category your sister would fall into. I'm glad that there are programs to help people like her, ones that are doing as much if not more than they can and need some help, but there are a lot of people that abuse the system.

I would be curious if anyone new what the actual percentage is of people who abuse the system vs. people that could actually benefit them in bad times. If 98% abused the system then I'd say, yeah, fuck em make em work for it, but I think it's probably much much lower than you think and if that's the case, then it would be pretty shitty to cut the programs, especially now.

I'm an atheist so church is out. I don't think the red cross gives out student loans for college. If it wasn't for the student loans I wouldn't have gone to college. I guess we could revert back to 1700s lifestyle and all live like the Amish if you want to eliminate government. I don't think the majority would support this choice though.

I'm not denying the fact that there are some that would get off their asses and work, but the majority of those who receive social assistance already have jobs.

You were doing so good until that last part. The point of the government isn't to tax it's people to death. It's function is to ensure that a society can exist without imploding. Raising taxes only helps us limp a little bit longer when the real problem are our loopholes, spending and how we should perceive government role's in our lives.

I don't agree to fully just cutting aid, because of modern day social patterns, but to make it were it's used only in dire situations that wouldn't perpetually stay dire. yaddamean?

there are way more people than there are jobs right now. People here that I know are getting desperate, so what should they do? Just accept the job that will pay lower than minimum wage when that minimum already barely provides?

This I agree with. I could be collecting disability right now. But i don't because between my part time and my wife's full time job we get by.
Government programs are like a light switch. It's either on or off. There is no "how much more do you need to cover your bills"?

Talk to people on these programs. You'll find they have this idea of "why can't my kids eat ice cream from entitlement money (welfare/food stamps). Isn't that just part of good parenting". FACEPALM...so is teaching your kid that they need to support themselves as best they can without relying on entitlements ...and that YOU'RE LIVING ON OTHER PEOPLE'S HARD WORKED INCOME. Suck it up till you can support yourself. Yeah that means no fucking ice cream, no movies, no steak, no soda....etc.
