    Solyndra goes bankrupt.

A123 Systems Alphabet Energy Amyris Battery Battery Ventures Biofuel Bloom Energy BP BrightSource Energy California Cleantech Open California Public Utilities Commission Cap

Solar company Solyndra is closing down and filing for bankruptcy.

That news, reported by NBC and which we’ve just confirmed with the solar company, is chilling because so many hopes have been pinned on Solyndra’s success story for job creation, solar manufacturing and a celebration of American innovation.

The Fremont, Calif., company, which uses a novel process to make solar panels that are consisted of rows of solar cell-lined tubes, is laying off its 1,100 full-time and temporary employees immediately, the company said. The company, which has suspended production, plans to file for Chapter 11 and figure out what to do with its intellectual property and assets. Options include selling its business and licensing is technology.

Solyndra has garnered the spotlight not only for its unusual technology but also for receiving a hefty federal loan guarantee of $535 million to build a factory. Solyndra broke ground on the factory project just before Labor Day in 2009 and completed the factory last year. Solyndra has also raised close to a billion dollars in equity and loans.

We knew this year would be a make-or-break year for Solyndra, given the company’s plan to ramp up production this year and perhaps putting behind the hubbub about its decision to forego an IPO in favor of raising private funding. The company had to lay off employees and close an older factory last year because it was having trouble competing with manufacturers, particularly those from China, that had built much larger factories and cut their costs significantly.
Not new news just posting it up.

Clearly Obama just needed to throw more money at them.

      Then there's always this.

Reporting from Washington and Los Angeles—
The White House faced mounting political complications as a second top fundraiser for President Obama was linked to a federal loan guarantee program that backed a now-bankrupt Silicon Valley solar energy company, and as two California lawmakers called for investigations of a state tax break granted to the firm.

Steve Spinner, who helped monitor the Energy Department's issuance of $25 billion in government loan guarantees to renewable energy projects, was one of Obama's top fundraisers in 2008 and is raising money for the president's 2012 reelection campaign.

Spinner did not have any role in the selection of applicants for the loan program and, in fact, was recused from the decision to grant a $535-million loan guarantee to Solyndra Inc. because his wife's law firm represented the company, administration officials said Friday.

But Spinner's role as a top official in the Energy Department program, which had not been previously revealed, is likely to spur new inquiries into whether political influence played a role in the handling of the "green" energy fund. Solyndra faces a congressional probe, a criminal investigation and separate internal inquiries at the Energy and Treasury departments.
Separately, lawmakers in Sacramento questioned a $27-million tax break given to Solyndra under a state law intended to encourage clean-energy companies to do business in California.

Bush also has his hand in this as well.

Saw that on a "Stossel" I think a day or 2 ago. Something to the effect that Bush didnt loan them the money because his advisory group told him they would run outta cash in September of 2011.

            Huh look at what happened.

The 0 needed something to point too, and hold up that the stimulus was working. What better than to say look we saved 1100 jobs and give a huge pile of cash to his personal friends who no doubt have pocketed enough that they dont have to worry about money anymore. So after a few visits to the white house the 0 gives them a giant pile of money and "loan" terms are changed so that the tax payers are not 1st on the list to be repaid by the sale of assets if there was a default and bankruptcy, to the LAST to get paid back!!!!!!!
