Google's new privacy policy

As tech bloggers gawked at Apple's record high earnings report, Google quietly announced that some changes to its privacy policy would kick into effect on March 1 and users will not be able to opt out. "Google said Tuesday it will require users to allow the company to follow their activities across e-mail, search, YouTube and other services, a radical shift in strategy that is expected to invite greater scrutiny of its privacy and competitive practices," explained The Washington Post's Cecilia Kang, who took note of Google's recent less-than-stellar earnings report as well as the privacy complaint the company recently settled with the Federal Trade Commission. "The information will enable Google to develop a fuller picture of how people use its growing empire of Web tools. Consumers will have no choice but to accept the changes." The new policy will also apply to Android users.

What are your guys' thoughts? IMO great evils are always masked as a means for peace or convenience.

Do you have a Facebook? Guarantee they know 100x more information about you than Google. I was always under the assumption that people already realized companies were tracking their own data. Dont like their policies? Dont use Google services. You can still use their search function on the main page though, without logging in.

Do you have a Facebook? Guarantee they know 100x more information about you than Google. I was always under the assumption that people already realized companies were tracking their own data. Dont like their policies? Dont use Google services. You can still use their search function on the main page though, without logging in.

I will admit that I still do kind of obsess over facebook and its just creepy to see those ads and etc but like any calf must eventually do im weening of the mothers supple and warm teet. But that is the problem, even with all the evidence we can bring up about the evils and the identity of what/who the Fed is, we can't seem to get off of it. Same principle will be applied to Google.

I miss event invitations to things I actually need to be at because of the assumption that "everyone is on facebook" 24/7 365 checking notifications on their mobile device religiously and cool guy David doesnt have one, sigh.

Facebook blatantly asks you for the information I see people getting huffy puffy on Google about. Or how about Apple or cell phone carriers tracking your GPS locations and shit, people getting outraged, and then turning to Twitter/Facebook to rant about it... its hilarious!

Show me anything that genuinely makes you think Google is evil. Every single step they have taken has made my life more convenient, and the information I give them them helps with this. They don't ask for more information than is necessary to do whatever it is I'm trying to do.
Is it creepy to look up your search history and see that it's all there? Sure. Is it helpful to search out something from 8 years ago? Hell yes.

Sure they can use it target advertisements with creepy efficiency, but cmon we're talking about a free service. They have to advertise.. and honestly these ads have been relevant enough to actually get my interest. The ads aren't in your face or trying to trick you into clicking on them.

The important thing is that I've noticed how well Google stands up against others trying to get information, and they stand up against companies trying to take down/censor content. They spend money on cool projects and charities. If a mistake is made or something happens they respond instantly and with efficient results. If I made a list of companies I love, Google is top 5 and by far the largest.

Compare to Facebook and others, who never miss an opportunity to lose my trust.

The fact that now anything you do while logged into your google account can and will be forever tied to your phone number and you personally. There by wiping your anonymity and privacy out, and with the click of a few buttons your web life is on display for anyone who can garner access.

I just don't have a problem with this. I've always understood this is how you get free services on the internet and now companies just have to own up to it for legal purposes.
