I don't venture much to this section of R3V, because of the nature of politics. No matter your views on a matter, if one side brings up a valid argument, the other side will treat it like it has no meaning and is invalid. Useless arguing. but I do have an opinion on this.

Ahh, here they come with the obligatory "If you've got nothing to hide, you've got nothing to fear" argument. I knew before I even opened this thread that it would be one of the responses. It's pretty much the go-to argument by people pro-big-brother when subjects like this get brought up.

Everyone has something to hide wither you know it or not. And mostly everyone has broken a law. Have you ever downloaded music or a movie without paying for it? And new laws get made every day, but they very rarely go away.
Bottom line is, I don't have anything to hide, but I don't have anything I'd like to show them either. But I shouldn't have to justify my position, they should have to justify theirs, and come back with a warrant.

If you value your freedom and know your history well, you will know that this is a real slippery slope. The government wants control, the police want their jobs to be justified so they receive more funding, more jobs, and more money, regardless of wither it's necessary or not. But they know they can't just completely have complete control and take away all your right and privacy at once... so what will happen is a gradual process which is much easier. They present new laws and acts which by themselves can look justified and harmless when presented the right way, and hard to argue against - "this will prevent crime" "this will protect us against terrorists".

I feel way more threatened by police/government than I ever have by terrorists or criminals. There's no one to protect you from the so called protectors.

Don't assume privacy is about hiding bad things and don't give up your rights so easily, many have died for them.

Ok, I got a different spin on this. Some car insurance companies are considering installing a device in your car that monitors your driving habits. It can tell if you are speeding, swerving fast, etc. The point is to appropriately charge insurance rates based on a driver's habits rather than a flat across the board fee dependent on where you live. The good drivers have nothing to worry about, whereas the bad drivers do. Would those that are against "big brother" be against this? If not, is it really that different?

Why would police waste their time spying on innocent people? They wouldn't. They are simply using technology to obtain information more easily about people they are highly suspicious about, without interfering in any way with those people's lives. I say if there is technology that can be used to help protect the general public without affecting ones civil liberties, then by all means use it.

That auto insurance example is a voluntary thing, you give up some privacy to get a discount on your service. Not even close to the same thing as the govt, just using tech all willy nilly to circumvent the intent of the constitution and the law.

For now, the Fed's are already working on legislation to put black boxes in ALL new vehicles.

there have been "black boxes" for nearly 2 decades for OEM's to study crashes and safety.

But the feds want GPS loggers so they can charge you a tax by the mile as well. Like the gas taxes are not enough.
