It's not just Texas redneck conservatives that have issues with them, here in BC this is a hot debate as well with the ultra-liberals siding with the ultra-conservatives of Texas such that they're an invasion of privacy and unnecessary. The health concerns however are laughable, if you have a cell phone or wireless internet in your home you have no ground to bitch. The meters transmit for about a minute to a minute and a half per hour at most, and at a much weaker signal than other wireless devices.

I can see this being used for warrants in the "war on drugs".

If I read correctly, the meters send real-time data on electricity usage. Which could raise an eyebrow, or give authorities a reason to kick down your door.

Now, I just say take your operation out doors. That way there are no timers to cause a significant spike in your usage each day.

It's not like the company would have a perfectly normal reason to do this, such as efficiently getting usage data without having to send someone out there and introducing human error. And accurately being able to apply the tiered pricing system where power during off-peak hours is cheaper. The loonies certainly should have to pay more and forfeit any price breaks if this is how they want to act.

I wonder if any of these people know or care how easy it would be to get this same data from the pole, well off the property line.. probably only using a wiretap warrant instead of going through the utility company (which would make sure there is in fact a warrant to play ball).

edit: for those not that versed in electrical shit, you can measure current by clipping a meter around the wire. no need to break the wire and install a meter to do this. To have such a meter that would just sit there and transmit the data would be super simple. If the company or the gov really needed this data without a fuss they would just do it this way. The upgraded house meter really is just to serve customers better.
