          My mother

I got done in 99. I had gone to both a small school with a graduating class of less than an 100 and where I did finish up at to a class of 298 and the freshman class in 99 was 37X kids...... Not a huge school but big for a non 1/2 million resident local city.

We never had metal detectors, lock downs, pat downs, cops in riot gear, or anything of the sort and a min-max security large state prison was only a few miles away and the middle school was in sight of it. Even when there was an escape we didnt have a lock down. We suspended class, and most of us walked out the door and left. When I was a senior I was considered and adult student due to my situation with my sick father across the state an mother in AZ. I could come and go as I pleased or needed. No need to be "buzzed in or out" Many of us would frequently leave for lunch and come back when class resumed at both schools. In fact when I was in middle school at the smaller district we had much the same freedoms to leave campus for lunch since the school was a block from down town small farmville.

The point to all this is that shit has changed a ton in the last 15 years. Where schools are locked at all times, kids cant go outside to get to the other side of the building in many cases anymore like at my alma mater all the short cuts from one end to the others outside doors are locked now. Schools have become little more than "free babysitting" and keep kids there at all costs, and then arrest the parents when they come to get the kid. We never had sign in books for visiting parents, if anyone should have full access to the school its the parents, after all its THEIR children that are in it and THEIR tax dollars that fund it. A sign in book is not unreasonable but an arrest for not signing into it is a bit on the extreme side for a reaction to it ffs.

            I wouldn't argue it either.

I graduated in 04, not too long ago. We didn't have police on site every day. If there was a fight it was handled in school without arrests.

Now fast forward to Present, and the same school is the exact opposite.

              Really?

I graduated in 2000 and there was always a cop on site. Not typically IN the school, but out in the parking lot.

don't get too emotional about this ;)

There are a lot of details left out so you're purely speculating as well. But not signing a sheet when a teacher has specifically called you to come is not up to the parent but up to the teacher that called. The teacher should of called the front desk to what the situation was so they could of properly dealt with a mother for all she knew had a dying son.

If emotions can't get into these situations then what the hell then? Government is there to secure the rights of the people. I would think it the right for a mother with a kid in distress to see her kid. If that's against the rules, it's not the mothers fault but the fault of the school/admin/teacher etc. With power comes responsibility and with public servants, serving the public should be #1. How that's done is where we will always disagree... until something like this happens to one of your own.

As sleeve quoted from his mother, the prisons shouldn't be schools. Oh wait...

I graduated in 03. We DID have 2 police officers in the school at all times. There where only 2 doors into the school that were open, and both were monitored. If there was a fight, the police responded, and dealt with it accordingly. This was in a small city in upstate NY with about 30k people.
The end of every hallway had doors that could be closed and locked remotely to, and I quote, 'minimize losses'. Our school was across the street and one block up from the police station.

My point is that just because where you went to school it was peaceful and rosy, and the parents and loved and cared for their kids, and could be trusted to do what they thought was best, doesn't mean the rest of the world is that way.

The rules are there or a reason. The need to be enforced for them to work. Otherwise, eventually, everyone is standing around after a tragedy, wondering 'how did this happen', and someone will have to admit 'I thought it was ok to ignore the rules this time'.

That's because this country fetishizes violence and also makes it incredibly easy for anyone to get a gun to blast innocents away.
