Because marriage is a religious event. I don't give a shit about the government paper. Long before laws/centralized governments, there was marriage. I also think that the government should stay 100% out of marriage. There should be no tax breaks, no benefits, etc. This disenfranchises people that choose to be single.

When I got married God, religion, Christianity, etc were not part of our ceremony in any way, as neither my wife or I are religious. Does that mean I'm not allowed to have sex, since my marriage wasn't a religious event?
