Jews in the eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk where pro-Russian militants have taken over government buildings were told they have to "register" with the Ukrainians who are trying to make the city become part of Russia, according to Ukrainian and Israeli media.Jews emerging from a synagogue say they were handed leaflets that ordered the city's Jews to provide a list of property they own and pay a registration fee "or else have their citizenship revoked, face deportation and see their assets confiscated," reported Ynet News, Israel's largest news website.

I was just about to post this. Hella fucked up.

So not only is Russia covertly invading and undermining a neighboring country, they're also about to expel all the Jews. This just keeps getting better and better....

Frankly I have no idea what the solution is. Sanctions only work to a certain point, and since Russia supplies a huge chunk of Europe's natural gas they can't enforce any kind of embargo without seriously hurting themselves. And while Russia may not be the military power it was 30 years ago, any kind of armed NATO response would instantly start WWIII on the plains of Eastern Europe.

While questions circulated about the origin of the flyers, Ynet reported the flyers said that because Jewish community leaders supported a Ukrainian nationalist movement and "oppose the pro-Slavic People's Republic of Donetsk," the interim government has decided: "that all citizens of Jewish descent, over 16 years of age and residing within the republic's territory are required to report to the Commissioner for Nationalities in the Donetsk Regional Administration building and register."
The notices reportedly demand Jews pay a $50 registration fee.
Kerry addressed the flyer reports during a press conference in Geneva, where he and other diplomats are meeting on the crisis in Ukraine.
"Just in the last couple of days, notices were sent to Jews in one city indicating that they have to identify themselves as Jews," he said. "In the year 2014, after all of the miles traveled and all of the journey of history, this is not just intolerable -- it's grotesque. It is beyond unacceptable."

I'm in Kiev right now and there's no imminent threat of war here. People here see the eastern region as undereducated farm people that all think joining Russia will have them moved to Moscow to dine with Putin.
