It didn't go OT. ParsedPenis just shared with us a misguided myth his daddy told him about hard work being the only determinant of success.

      His naïveté is cute, though.

Its mostly how almost everyone I know that makes 6 figures a year got where they are. I knew NO one in the trade I am in when I got started to vouch for me. I took a shot a put a resume in, I got a CHANCE to prove my self no more no less, and I guess I did. I now am working for one of the top tier outfits in my industry GLOBALLY at the cutting edge of technology in my industry. Basically 1 year out of 1st generation equipment, with supervisors managers and other outfits all wanting me to work on their projects it pays to be in demand it seems. I didnt have any help getting into my business I saw a opportunity and ran with it, Though I am fortunate to have landed where I did in the beginning, it had lead me to what is now a very good friend, and mentor.

No hard work is not the ONLY key to success, but its the most fundamental.

BTW I dont HATE poor people I grew up as a poor person, for most of my adult life i was close to or under the poverty line, its a flip side of the coin I know all too well. I am average and if I can find a way to make solid upper middle class income year over year then ANYONE can do it, and I mean anyone, you just have to know where too look. and to quote mike rowe, get ready to get dirty. I am sorry I guess I dont understand the whole woe's me approach to life I have a shity job there is nothing I can do about it line of thought

Oh Nice you paid about 6k in taxes more than I did last year congrats on your level of success I am sure you have worked hard for it. I dont mind paying taxes I just think there are better ways to go about collecting them, as taxing income is both stupid and punitive for EVERYONE.

You're wasting your breath sleeve... Luck > hard work for these folks. Unfortunate sign of the times.

So I had to put over 10 years into my profession, and be damn good at it, to get a bit over the $20/hr mark.

And now kids out of high school will be making 15/hr for asking if you would like fries with that?

Facepalm. Nothing good will come of this.

Its luck and College being the only path mindset. Its been beat into our head for generations that its the only way you will ever make something of your self. The whole mindset that blue collar work is the punishment for failure to go though the prescribe program. I know LOTS guys that make 5k-8k a week that barley graduated high school with a C average. There have been shortages of GOOD qualified welders in this country for a long time especially in the NUKE industry. Learn to weld and the sky is nearly the limit, in your earning potential.

Should have bootstrapped harder! Apparently if you aren't making the money you want it's your fault.

                    No, I'm not jealous.

I just see how this will go down. Why work hard to advance your career when everything will be spoon fed to you.

I believe after several months of research, consideration, and talking to my wife...I have decided to start up a moving to Europe fund. I'm pretty much finished with the mentality of the social structure(Seattle raising it's minimum wage for people who will flip burgers equal to that of MY WAGE being the perfect representation), watching the corruption of the government becoming more prominent every week, banks filing for bankruptcy, the food being filled with hormones and chemicals, the educational system stealing from our children and their families, working all year for only 2 weeks of time off, and the military having "exercises" above residential neighborhoods (look up recent activity in Cincinnati). My friend witnessed it. I can't help but to shake the gut feeling that America is on a verge of a "Rome-like collapse". I believe Europe has mine, and my wife's name on it (my wife is French). We haven't decided on which country at all at this point, however, but we have decided America will not be the place for our permanent residency.

No one forces you to keep working at a job that does not pay what you want it too, other than YOU. There is nothing keeping a person form leaning, retraining, taking risks and starting their own path, relocating or other wise keeping them from figuring out how to grow their earning potential in life, other than them selves. The choices we all make about what we are willing to do in life are the primary reasons limiting our earning potential, more often than not its the things we are NOT willing or flat out refuse to do that hinder us most. This completely ignores other life choices that we make that keep us bound to those that bank roll our life styles.

Minimum wage argument... really separates those who study (sound) economics, and those who watch (state-sanctioned) television programming.
