practice with anything you get and put more into your glass than the body... megapixel-wise at least (for starters).
IF you can find someone selling a D80 for a reasonable price. everyone I have seen selling them wants way too much for them. the lowest i saw was around $750 with the kit lens. not a good deal IMO because the D90 is barely more, and the D60 is a LOT less.

btw clay, i watched that nikon creative lighting video. its nice to know much of what needs to be done can be done with the SB600, but i found it to be hilarious when he had like 6 flashes set up just for one portrait and then tried to pass it off as "extremely portable". lol

if you are on a budget, get the Canon 20D just like some suggested and pair it with 50mm f/1.8.... then save some for the L lense

I bought canon because everyone around me has a canon to swap lens/flashes with.

Our whole office is full of Canon users, so i basically get to borrow flashes and lenes for free when I have an event coming up. The is a big plus for me since i wasn't going to spend money on lenes/flashes right away.

Either way, nothing wrong with Nikon's they have their advantages too. But talk to you friends, being able to borrow stuff helps when your short on cash but still want to learn.

It also made be realize how much more I prefer Wide-angles than zoom, I then went out and bought a wide-angle before buying a zoom, since i'd use it more.

If you do decide to go Canon, check out POTN, there's a wealth of information there.
