Based on the SCCA rules, I don't think you are allowed to change gearing or change your limited slip in STS.

Are you saying that an E30 could be competetive against, for example, a WRX or an E30 M3 in STX class?

    Jared
No you can't change gearing or diff in STS. Actually if you have an LSD you shouldnt be in STS to begin with, save the few rare exclusions of cars with factory crap lsd's. Even now though, they are moving them all to STX, along with all the AWD cars (i.e. 2.5RS) to keep STS the "traction limited class" they all want it to be.

What was the problem with the Quaife?
You will never get the inside rear tire to stop spinning. May work okay with street tires though.

So, the stock LSD has a higher/faster lockup rate than the Quaife? That's interesting. Or was it just the 4.10, and the Quaife would work fine with the 3.73?

          A 325i/is doesn't stand a chance against a WRX or M3 in STX.

To be honest, the Quaife worked marginally better than the factory LSD in my E30 (which had about 200k on it). A build up stock unit is definitely a better way to spend your money. That is the only result I've seen work with a BMW yet.

Changing gear ratios will not make a difference in how well the Quaife works or not. However bad it does with a 4.10, it will do just s bad with a 3.73.

The way to go for a BMW in a street tire classis is STX in a E36 328is. Myself and Terry Baker campaigned one this past year in STS and had mixed results. STS is definately NOT the place to be for any BMW. It's too course dependent. I was in the ball park in Topeka on day 2 and waaay off on day one. We feel that E36 328is is a perfect fit in STX. Our main problem was putting down the power, and an LSD solves the problem. We should have changed classes before Nationals (we had an LSD diff ready) but we thought we had a chance for a top ten.

An E30 M3 has an outside chance in STX.

Run an E30/E36 in STS for fun, but get used to seeing alot of Honda's in front of you...

BTW: C. Courmier (STX Mini) beat T. Hoppe (STX WRX) on day two IN THE RAIN. The WRX's are not invincible in the wet and BMW's are great rain cars.

I'm a little confused here, does the E36 328is come with a viscous LSD that would allow it to be in STS?

I think the wording is a little confusing here. From what I gather he meant he should have put in an LSD and gone to STX rather than run STS sans LSD. No 328i/328is in the US came from the factory with an LSD.

Rich is right. We ran the open diff in STS but had the option of installing an LSD and running in STX.

We chose poorly and ran STS @ Nationals with an open diff.

Is there any special reason to choose an E36 328 over an E36 325 for STX? How about an E46 330?

The e36 328 comes out with 20-30 ft-lbs more toruqe and 10 more rwhp than the e36 325/323. It does take a hit with the 2.93 gears but I would imagine the gearing penalty is worth the extra toruqe.

I would think a e46 330 would be an awesome car for STX. Off BMW, IS300 seems like it would do well along with Type-R Integra.

Are you allowed to remove your rear seat in DSP?
