    1988 528e dyno session

this is my busted old 528e 5spd. It needs to be parted out of its misery.
the car has 193,000 miles, a 2 1/4" exhaust, and a k&n filter (stock replacement)
the other day, just for laughs, we put it on the dyno.
the first 2 runs are in 3rd gear, the last run is in 4th.

    heres how she did:

    run #1:
    a pull on the dyno in 3rd gear: 124hp/153tqcar has only a 2" or 2 1/4" (can't recall) exhaust and a k&n panel filteralso has 193,000 miles

    run #2:

    run #3
4th gear pull, netting the same results.124hp/153tq

sorry that the vids are so dark, the shop has a few lights out. it was much brighter in there than it looks though.....

    results: 124hp/153tq

im surprised the torque isnt a little higher since the HP seems to have held on. no chip or anything? religious maintenance or no?

not yet, the printer was down there, so they are going to email me the sheets.

i was very surprised, since these cars only put down 128hp/170tq at the flywheel when new. because of drivetrain loss and mileage i thought it would be much lower. no chip that i'm aware of...

          the maintenance consists of:
add oil when needed, change when the lights tell me to.
daily flogging of the car, there is not a day i drive it that it doesn't see 110mph. sometimes as high as 125mph.

Also consider that BMW is known for advertising a lower hp than what the engines are actually putting out(when new). And the gas is much better quality than it was 20 years ago.

A chip will do very little for an '88 super eta.

But congrats on the results. Keep driving the piss out of it!

you just said what i was thinking. i assumed it may have been under-rated, but wasn't sure. a friend of mine had his e39 540i dyno 270hp, with no mods except an axle-back exhaust. bmw says that the m62 only makes 284hp at the flywheel, so we thought that was a little odd.

but if what you say is true, then it makes perfect sense.

also, about the gas, i just run regular (87), although i've been told premium (91 or higher) is recommended. we do have 93 where i live, but i doubt it would make much difference.

Just fwiw, dyno numbers, especially peak numbers, are pretty misleading to compare, due to the numerous variations in dyno machines, ambient temp, motor temp, etc, etc. Its cool to see that old sled put down respectable numbers though!

with those numbers and no specification, i figured they were calculated flywheel HP numbers. rob makes a great point about peak numbers. could be 110 on one dyno and 130 on another. as long as its fun thats all that matters. come to think of it i dont care much about dyno "numbers" anyway, its all in the graph of course.

88 is super eta right? Wouldn't that explain the lower torque/higher HP then a normal eta? It kind of bridges the gaps between a b25 and a b27. I'd love to see the actual power curve on one, I don't think I have before.

yes, the 88 "e" was considered the "super e". it revs to 5100rpm (limiter at 5300rpm) instead of 4500rpm, and makes 128hp/171tq, compared to the regular "e" which makes 121hp/171tq. so you get 8 more hp and another 600rpm.
