Autocross Rim/Tire combo

Hmm I see. Well the fact being I don't personally know anyone on Yokohama AVS ES100, I'll trust you guys on that and won't buy them. However I do know quite a few people personally who take their cars to the track on the Hankook Ventus RS3, so maybe I'll pick up a set of those in 225/45/15. They are a bit more expensive and the tread wear is considerably lower at 140... how long do you think these tires will last?

Treadwear ratings don't mean much once you start using the tires for autocross (or track, I'm assuming). On my old Toyota, I chewed through name-brand 400-treadwear all seasons in maybe 30 autocross runs; shredded, chunked, and corded the hell out of them. Bought some 180-treadwear autocross tires, and they worked great for 200 runs plus 15K street miles.

Short version, track tires will last longer on-track than minivan tires will, no matter what the treadwear number says.

I think there is still a huge overstock of ES100s, they stopped manufacturing them a couple years ago. Must have been a good seller despite the lack of performance. I think they are finally clearing them out though as I saw a couple ads for some really cheap Yokohama tires to clear out for the new ones.

people will swear by them, but that's exactly why using tire rack reviews and the like is useless for choosing tires. you'd really have to try a lot of different tires to know the difference between a good one and a bad one.

hell I had ES100s in 2003, to give you an idea of how ancient they are in terms of tire technology.

Remember the A520s? Man, talk about a stiff sidewall / sharp turn in tire of 10 years ago.

Bingo, all true statements. I can't believe they are still selling the ES100, more importantly I can't believe people are still buying them.

FYI if you're autoxing and buying new wheels, anything wider than 7.5 bumps you up a class.

235/40/17 Star Specs on ARC group buy wheels (17x8 et 25) in DSP.

You know, I really hated those wheels at first. Thought they didn't fit the E30's lines. But then I saw them on a car or two and I liked them a lot better.

Looking at the price point though, wide 15s plus tires are still around the same price as a set of those.

I run 225/50 toyo r888 on 15x7 style 5's. I run in SM.

They are just horrible tires. You get good tire reviews from any gearshift biscuit who changed from horrible tires to less horrible tires, or worn tires to new tires, or from guys who just plain don't know what the hell they're talking about. That's the problem with tire reviews.

I'd go with the G Force Sport (a cheaper tire) over the ES100 any day, if you actually want an autocross-worthy tire you might check out the 225/45R15 Hankook RS3. Or you could step down to a 205 and go for a Z1 Star Spec, Kumho XS or RE-11. It's between those and the big R-comps (R888, RA1, NT01).

What's wrong with them? They have tons of good reviews. Or are you taking about the size? I'm interested to know... I havn't bought them yet so any constructive criticism helps.
