I had an 86 Mazda RX-7 that I did a ps delete on. The rack was so well balanced on that car that I could DD it and had no problems, even turning at a dead stop. If your engine is light and your rack rules, ps delete is a no brainer. The only big thing would be a damper for track days. You dont want the rumble strip trying to rip the wheel from your hands at 70 mph.

EDIT: There was a point for me saying all this. Is the e36 rack as mentioned before really that much better? Im new to working with bimmers, and I want my car to look kinda sorta stock but I want the thing to perform like nothing else. And if an e36 rack would put it on rails minus ps, I want.

I ditched my power steering years ago and have done a few autocrosses with my E30. It's fine. Once you're used to no power steering you don't even notice it.

I left the power steering belt off at the last track day and loved it. It didn't really wear me out at all, but it was a lot easier to tell when the tires were going away on me.

my last autox car was a 323i e21 close ratio non-power steering rack in it. Other than parrell parking it wasn't bad. The fun part was watching the look on my friends faces when i would swap rides with them.. Believe me after driving a civic with power steering a manual rear wheel drive BMW is a wake-up...

HA! That pretty much sums it up perfectly! It's not that its too difficult to drive w/o PS, it's just that when you get used to PS and then try to drive without it you get surprised.

                track day... not= ...auto-x

i can see how it would be nice for a track day, as turning is smooth and progressive all the time. but in auto-x, you need to jerk that wheel around pretty hard.

I had thought of this before but for what I use the car for I think I'd rather just stick with it.

yeah, I know. just adding input that perhaps someone might find useful. Perhaps I'm just not much of an autocrosser, but at least on the courses I usually run, inputs on an autocross are still smooth and progressive. They have to be for a 318is to be quick at all, heh. There's just a lot less steady cornering and more transition.

at any rate, yeah, I understand hah. I probly shouldn't have posted that here.

I had ps on my old car with the m52, however when I did the engine swap I ended up deleting it. I love the feel without it, dont think Il go back any time soon.
