    Wow thanks for all the info! Still not as familiar with these engines as I'd like to be but i can tell there's a lot of knowledge here. A little update on the project: The car has evolved in design. Was originally going to be a single seater modeled after a 1957 Maserati 250 F, now is more taking the shape of a revised Caterham to accomodate a second passenger. Oh, and an M60 :D I've done calculations and am reasonably hoping to land somewhere in the 500bhp/ton range.

    Yeah it was an 04. It only saw the dealer twice:

    - Recall for the exhaust melting some sensors or something if the car was kept over 2.5k RPM while not moving for 'extended periods of time'. I think they added/changed heat shielding. I didn't know or care as it seemed like it would only be an issue for complete idiots
    - The high beams stayed on on both sides (the low beam/high beam are the same bulb with that electronic cover that opens and closes).

    The car was really reliable for the 90k km's that we had it. That reflash would have been nice to save a few bucks lol.

    must have been a few years ago. 2004-2006 maybe? they came out with a reflash that made it not an issue.

    and yes.. it eats premium like crazy. i average 17-19mpg per tank of gas. and i commute 60 miles a day. one month (last year) my gas bill was $450.

    i had a greddy turbo for it, which would have been 250whp/200lbs/ft, but i sold it so i could buy an e30 -for my gf- and fix it up.

    I drove my dad's RX-8 for a couple years before getting my e30 and it needed a quart of oil after every 2 full tanks of gas, i have no idea how you were going 3k without needing to ad oil. When I drove it it saw redline quite a bit mainly because it had so little torque. I have to say though, it is such a pleasurable car to drive because of it's handling characteristics. I just wish it had more power. It definately wasn't boring but it needs more juice.

    In addition, it ate more fuel than the e39 540i :(. I would love if my e30 could one day handle like an RX-8 but I doubt it's possible.

    or maybe you suck at conveying your meaning. it could have been read "people were more impressed more by the rotary" as in the performance was better at 225k than an M20 at 225k. you didn't say what impressed them. ;)

    ^ yeah. as i said, oil consumption is not a big deal to me. by the time it goes a quart low its time to change the oil. so i never have to add any extra.

    huge horsepower is easy with the rx7 motor. the 13b-rew makes gobs of horsepower very easily, especially when peripheral ported.

    the rx8's renesis.. ehh.. i know of 1 500whp renesis. a handful of 400whp renesis motors. 350whp and below is pretty easy to achieve with less than 10 grand. if you want crazy amounts of horsepower, you do a 3 rotor swap. then 600-1200whp is attainable. (with shit tons of money.)

    horsepower aside, the rx7 is not very reliable. the rx8 is pretty hard to squeeze more horsepower out of naturally aspirated, and doesnt make crazy amounts of horsepower with force induction. the rx8 is, however, much more reliable than the rx7. its still not a honda civic. its also not an m20.

    everyone is impressed with a 225k mile rotary. people go meh to a 225k mile m20. that says something, even with all the misinformation about rotaries.

    1 quart/ 3k is nothing. most companies spec 1 litre or more per 1k.. For an engine that self lubricates through mixing oil with gas, i'd say 1 quart is nothing.

    And any day of the week, you can build a huge horsepower rotary for pretty cheap.
