Experienced Track Junkies - A moment please?

I know the M20 is fine for track days.... But hypothetically..... Theoretically..... If you had the brakes to go with the increase in power, would you guys prefer a turbo m20 or an s50 (or variation of 24v swap).

PM me for detailing services in the Longmont / Boulder Area in Colorado!

simple and lighter is better. I think a n/a 24v gives you both. My s50 car was pretty quick, it took my friends m20 turbo car to hit about 120mph before it would pull on me.

I was / still am wanting to do an S50, but a turbo M20 has become appealing recently... Don't really care how I make more power, I just want more power for street use. But the car sees track days, autocrosses, driving schools, etc. on the weekends and I don't want something unpredictable or complicated that might break and leave me stranded, etc.

Yes, go 24v. Turbo requires quite a bit more effort and will not be as reliable.

Refreshed, Tuned OBD-I S52. Or S54 if you've really got some cash to burn.

But for me? My next E30 will be powered by an LSx variant.

                You can do a cam/LS6 intake on an L33 (5.3L truck motor) with a T5 and have a 350+hp V8 in an E30 for a reasonable cost.

Track days are always more fun when you're actually driving the car, which is probably why you use an E30 anyway. They're reliable, consistent and easy to drive. Turbocharging the car eliminates what's great about these cars, whereas an S50 amplifies it.

Alternately, you can sell the E30, add the money you'd spend on the S50 swap and just get an E36 M3. They're crazy cheap right now, and you get a better all around car for your effort.

I've owned 13 porsches including 911 turbo and 944 turbo and while they were fun on the street they weren't on track. My 944 na car will out run both even with 150 bhp I am building an S50 track car now. Can't wait to get it on track this fall. NA baby!!!!

don't bother with turbo if you actually want to drive the car on track instead of fixing it in the paddock :) have you maximized the potential of your m20 yet?
