Why not just remove the center console where the e-brake is and bolt it there. Easy to get to and secure.

Well, he said he did not want to hack up the interior.

Alright, let's go ever this again for the last time.

How long do you think it will take you to undo the zip ties? You carry knife in your pocket at all times? How abou those hose clamps? Even longer and you need a screw driver. Think about how you are going to be on adrenalin from driving, combined with unwelcomed excitement of seeing your car catch on fire and you will hopefully understand that if it requires ANY tools you will never get the stupid thing out before it's too late. Cars burn really fast and hence you need to have some sort of QUICK DISCONNECT clamp or retainer for the extinguiser.

Also as I've mentioned already, it also need to be in a location where you can reach it WHILE STILL BUCKLED UP IN DRIVER"S SEAT. Not in trunk, not in the passenger footwell, not under the hood.

Assuming you're going to use this for track events, you'll need it to be at arms length as Alex and Trent mentioned, and you'll need a quick release clamp. Given these 2 components, you'll be hard pressed to find a spot that doesn't require some holes or changes to the interior. If you're using stock seatbelts, you'll be able to reach a little further than with a harness. What type of belts do you have. If harnesses are used, you don't have many options in terms of location, and they're all going to require some bolting to the chassis to be safe. If its not secure, you'd probably be safer just letting it burn since an extinguisher makes for a pretty nice projectile in an accident. Good luck whatever you do. I'd say hack away to be safe, or let it burn until the safety crew arrives to put it out. You shouldn't go onto the track with a full bladder so that won't work either :D .

While I certainly agree w/ Alex' that a extinguisher within arm's reach is ideal, I don't think the trunk is really that bad of an idea if modifying the interior is out of the question. Note that my track car has one at arm's length attached to the base of the rollbar right near the door (not in trunk). I can grab it on the way out of my car. But if the car is on fire, your first priority ought to be to get the hell out of your harness and out of the car. Then you can grab the extinguisher out of the trunk as opposed to going back in the cockpit.

Alright I can see another situation where you can't get out of the car for whatever reason and you need to fight the fire from within the car, then a trunk extinguisher would be useless.

So what am I saying? Better in the trunk than no extinguisher, and if you put it in the cockpit make sure you can grab it on the way out and it doesn't keep you in the car another second (zip ties would be terrible). I don't think the seat mount would work w/a harness as I can't reach under the front of my seat w/ my harness on. But you would have a rollbar at least if you had harnesses anyway, so I imagine you have the stock belts which would make it no problem - and probably the optimal location for a car w/ the stock belts.

Very true..... but I have to agree with Alex on this point...

In our race car, our extinguisher is mounted next to the ebrake with a quick disconnect...

But to make a point about trunk extinguishers, BMW (OEM 5 Series) had them in the trunk...

Extinguishers in a street condition is different compared to a race situation...

Hey Alex, have you ever seen a fire extinguisher intended for mounting in a car? They ALL have quick release brackets. Obviously I, and the guy that made the zip tie suggestion, were talking about mounting the friggin' BRACKET. The extinguisher will still release with the flip of a lever.

                      Sheesh.

And as for where it's mounted, yes yadda yadda may be ideal, but life is imperfect. A thousand dollar plumbed system would be ideal, but I'm not going to have that. In the trunk is better than in the pits sitting next to my shit. In the interior is better than in the trunk. In the passenger footwell is a perfectly acceptable spot for my purposes. I'm not going to tear my center console out for track days.

I think you'd be much better off, and safer, mounting the bracket with something other than zip ties. The force of an accident could easily snap them and you'd end up with a nice 5lb bullet flying around the cabin.

I see a fire extinguisher as a good thing to have in case. But for me it would be the worst kind of bad luck, like the next day my engine would blow.

if my zip tied bracket does happen to come off in an accident, i think a fire extinguisher rolling around my passenger foot well is going to be the least of my worries. i carry another behind my seat now. paranoia? ever after my little fire (luckily had extinguisher in my hand, saved myself $$$ shit loads of fire damage as i got to it basically as it ignited) and a mate of mine car being written off due to shoddy wiring......when you see how fast they spread even 2 doesnt seem enough

I was just thinking the same thing. Perfect place, doesn't get in the way, and easy to get to even while still fully yanked down in a harness.
